For the past 10 days, Betsy has been crying in her sleep. Not whimpering or whining, crying. Sometimes even hysterical crying. Up until today it had just been at night, but she's started doing it during her nap. She's sleeping when I go in there to see what's wrong, but she's crying in her sleep. There's not much I can do -- I make sure she has her dolly, make sure the blanket is on her, and I rub her back for a few minutes until she calms down. Just now, I had to pick her up and rock her back to sleep because she was beyond hysterical. She's been sick, so I know that's a big contributer to the crying but is there anything else that could be causing this? It makes me feel so horrible to know my little girl is so upset.

It might be a bad dream, maybe? I'm not sure. Max does sometimes, but he usually quiets himself down pretty quickly. Hopefully someone else has a better answer for you

I'm not sure either. I would guess maybe a bad dream also. I would just continue to calm her down like you are and put her back to sleep. Hopefully some others may have some better ideas or personal experience.

it sounds like maybe night terrors ... and this is a very common/typical age for them. DS went through it for awhile at this age ... thankfully Kaylee hasn't. i know it can be scary b/c they're crying like they've been hurt or something is very wrong. With DS there was nothing actually ever wrong ... just it being a night terror sorry it seems like you're going through it too with Betsy.

It is scary hon! Nat cries out in her sleep a bit, but Owen full on screams and shouts words and if I go to him he is still asleep but his eyes are open and it freaks me out. It takes a while to wake him enough where he can understand I am there and he is ok. I don't know what it is, I thought it was night terrors too.

Wow -- I've never known anyone that had night terrors before. So this is typical for her age? I figured once or twice was possibly a bad dream, but every night (and now during her nap today) had to be something else. I hope this is related to her not feeling well and not the night terrors.

These poor little kids, having such scary dreams and not being able to tell us about them.

This has been Autumn the last 2 nights, but her reason turned out to be a double ear infection- you mentioned that she was sick, just a thought the pressure of lying flat with an ear infection causes pain. I hope she feels better soon! Poor Betsy!!

How scary. I was also gonna say night terrors. The good part of this is that she does not remember anything when she wakes up. Think if it as a bad phase.. it will pass. I hope it passes quickly. Hugs.

She always goes to sleep without problems. Last night, about 2.5 hours after she fell asleep, the crying started and it was so bad that it took me THREE separate rocking-in-the-glider sessions to get her to fall asleep. Then, I didn't hear a peep out of her for the rest of the night.

No problems with her nap today and I think she's feeling better, so fingers crossed that she'll sleep without crying tonight!

Maybe teething? Maybe try a dose of Tylenol before bed?
