My grandma had contacted her local paper to tell them about our tradition and a reporter came out yesterday and it was already in the paper

Sweet family tradition

I am the decorator placing sequins with a tweezer mentioned in the article.

Today was my family's annual cookie decorating fest

Holy macaroni! It looks like a bakery in there! What a fun tradition -- looks like everyone had a fun (and super productive!) time.

How fun!!!

I have to ask, because my dad has me on a mission to find the recipe and my Granny took it with her to her grave...

Are those crunchy cookies (I guess kind of like sugar cookies or something?) and is that icing hard? Do you bake the icing on the cookie for any length of time?

I HAVE to find out how to make these freaking cookies and I've no idea! I remember them to be crunchy and the icing was hard. They were YUMMMMMY!!! Maybe I'll try your recipe and see if it's close. His Christmas present is always a huge box of cookies and every year he asks for these but I've never tried them because I've no idea how to make them!

WOW! That's a lot of cookies. That is a pretty awesome family tradition. I'm with Gwynne, I need some recipes. When ever I try to ice cookies like that my icing is too runny!

Gwynne-it's not a super crunchy or hard cookie, but not super soft or chewy either. They are a cut out sugar cookie. My aunt is the offical white froster and then we decorate them. Sometimes we let the base coat harden all the way first-that way you can get really precise colored lines like on the churches that my Grandma did. Others we let sit for a for few to harden just a bit on the surface to make it easier to draw on and then others we do right away so that if we use sprinkles and such it sticks or with the ones with the smeared lines like a few of the ornaments in the pictures.

It takes about 24 hours for the frosting to fully harden so that hey can be stacked up.

The cookies are easily frozen and don't seem to lose any of their yumminess either I usually freeze some of mine to avoid eating them all at once.

My grandma is so awesome, especially when it comes to Christmas cookies! SHe makes about 2 dozen different kinds of cookies/goodies, with multiple batches of each kind. She takes them various places and everyone looks forward to them at Christmas!

How wonderful! My friend is Italian and every year her family gets together the same way and makes a huge amount of italian fig cookies for the St. Joseph's alter. I always thought that was pretty cook. I want to start a tradition like this when I'm back home in Louisiana. Maybe next year!

Awesome! That's a ton of cookies! What a fun tradition! I make cream cheese sugar cookies...they are kind of like a cake cookie but not quite as soft. What kind of frosting do you guys use? I make royal icing and water it down for the base...takes a few hours to dry and then pipe the accents on with harder royal icing. It's such a back breaking chore though, I'm not sure I'm up to it this year...if I am I'll share pictures too. How neat that you guys all take part in the decorating and get to take yummy cookies home with ya! TFS!

And super cool it made the paper
