At what age would you allow your kids to sleep in a top bunk or loft bed?

We are struggling with this question right now. We really want a bunk bed but don't know if we really trust that an almost 5 yr old wont break her neck. She still gets up in the middle of the night to go pee a couple times a week and I can totally see her falling. IDK.....hopefully someone else will have some input.

I was in a top bunk when I was 5. I think it depends on the kid. If the kids a crazy dare devil then I would wait till maybe 7 or so?

We have two sets of bunk beds at our lake house and I would NOT let my 6.5 year old on the top. She begs and I still tell her no.

I'm really afraid of her getting up in the middle of the night and not realizing she is up there and then she falls out.....and we have a ceiling fan in there and it's always going and I picture her getting hit by the fan.

For OUR situation, I will say age NINE.

Blair sleep walks/has night terrors so no and she is 7. Morgan would sky dive off them.

It really depends on the kid. I would say that Daryn was okay at 5 although I didn't get her a loft bed until she was 7.
I agree with Meg, no bunk beds in the same room as a ceiling fan! Luckily, in our climate, people don't normally have ceiling fans in bedrooms.

We tried Jacob in a loft bed when he was 6 and he wouldn't stop climbing over the side and standing on his window sill... scared me to death so we got rid of it!

I definitely think it depends on the child, I was in a bunkbed when I was 5 with no problems.

My gut says 8. I have no experience with it though, so I'm not sure....

My first instinct would say 8 too but I can't say for sure. It depends on the child and their sleeping habits.

Agree...can't really say for sure, and it depends on the kid, but maybe 7 or 8.

I guess it depends on the child. My friend's daughter is 2 and sleeps on the top bunk with her sister. She is really good with getting up there and getting down. I made sure Dashaun slept on the bottom bunk when he spent the night. I don't think he is ready but I can't think of an age either.

I am in the minority here we have bunkbeds for the boys and Ethan has slept on the top so at least 3.5 but Brennan then realized he could climb to the top bunk but he can't get down yet so currently till Brennan can get down safely the stairs are against the wall and the top mattress is on the floor.

I would wait until at least 8 or 9.

I know I'm being a Debbie Downer here, but I had a student who fell from a top bunk and had to have a plate put into his skull. TG, he didn't suffer serious developmental injury but what a terrible event.

By coincidence, this boy became friends with DS 2, Tula's dad , when they were in elementary school...after the injury. When I went to to visit Tula's dad at summer camp, this little kid was his bunk mate. And guess what.... he was in the top bunk again !

Kaeden's 4 and sleeps on the top bunk and I'm super paranoid about it but it has stairs, not a ladder and the top bunk is pretty well made and he won't fall off.

It really depends on the kid. Bryce was sleeping top bunk when he was barely 3.

Id have to say it depends on the child- although accidents can happen at any age. Both my sister and I both fell off the top bunk- at some point growing up and it wasn't because we were trying to- it was because we were sleeping.

Somewhere between 6-8, it depends on how he is. Technically he's already in a loft bed, it's just upside down

Is it the one from ikea? That's the one I'm thinking of and it's not THAT high and with the covered canopy add on it would
Make rolling out while
Sleeping basically impossible.

Ikea recommends age six for it.
