Thanks to pinterest I decided to hack an IKEA expedit bookshelf and turn it into a bench with storage for the playroom.
I'm not handy or crafty at all so I'm pleased with how it turned out. Mostly I just like the extra seating for when we have parties and the fact that the baskets I put in for storage are 'hidden' so all her little people, wooden food for the kitchen, hot wheels, etc. are in one place and not visible so it looks tidy.
anyway here's a quick pic:
I'm going to have my eye out for a nicer looking fabric, something with a print probably. but for now... this works!
I bought the storage boxes and then looked for a fabric to match. I didn't intend on doing a solid print but there wasn't a lot to choose from at the store and I was in a "this has to be done RIGHT NOW" kind of mood so I didn't want to look online. I had a black and creme floral picked out but it wasn't very thick and I didn't want it to tear, I went with the green b/c its corduroy. Ideally what I'm looking for for long term (I will probably switch this when I find a better fabric) is a canvas indoor/outdoor type of material that I think will probably hold up better.
Anyway its a piece of MDF board I had them cut to size and then I bought a giant piece of foam suhioning (2 inch thick) and used a kitchen electric carving knife to cut that... and since I don't sew and wasn't about to mess with a slip cover, I just used a staple gun to staple the fabric over the board and to the foam.
The interest lady (who did a much more attractive version than mine, of course, lol) then drilled the cushion onto the bookshelf from the underside. This isn't sliding around at all and I want to be able to easily take it off to recover, so its just sitting on top.
