Has anyone heard about all the grandparent scams happening over the last year or so? Thieves are calling elderly people and claiming to be their grandson/granddaughter and coming up with stories like they are in a Mexican jail or they were involved in an auto accident or something, and asking for thousands of dollars to bail them out, pay attorney fees, etc.

My DH got a call from his sister a few months ago asking if everything was alright and if he was in Mexico and he said No. Apparently, his grandma in Wyoming had gotten a call from a scammer saying that he was my DH and was in a Mexican jail and needed her to wire him money to get him out. Thank God, she didn't send it and had his sister check into the story. So then I hear this weekend, that the exact same thing happened to MY grandpa! He got a call from someone saying it was his grandson, and my Grandpa was like "Dan?" so he gave away the name and the guy just ran with this story about being in a Mexican jail. So my Grandpa called my Mom and she told him Dan was at work. I guess he got another call a little later from someone pretending to be my brother's attorney. What they think is it's a pretty elaborate scam. Apparently some young Hispanic people approached him at a gas station not long ago and asked if he wanted to hear about the Lord and yadda, yadda and he said he wasn't interested, but he still offered up his phone number to them. So our guess is that they sent that information to people in Mexico who make the phone call and collect the money at a Mexican western union.

Do you think your grandparents are naive enough to be taken advantage of in something like this? If so, you may want to warn them.

Terrible!

I can't see either of my living grandparents falling for it. They're both pretty skeptical in general.

that is crazy...and sad.

none of my grandparents are living...so i cant say for sure. but i would hope that most people would call some family members and try to confirm the story before wiring that kind of money.

I don't have any living grandparents and my dad would probably believe something like that but his dimentia is so bad that he doesn't know that you have to use money for things any more so he wouldn't give any info out.

Yes ! I've heard of this.

A friend was telling me about a grandparent she knew who received a phone call like this. The con went down the same way with the person saying, "Grandma, it's me." And the grandmother said, "Ryan?" And the caller just went with it.The caller also said, "Don't tell Mom and Dad that I'm in trouble."

TG, she also had enough sense to check with another family member.
