Does your dr calculate your LO's BMI if they went to a wellness appt recently?

They did today for Jude. I don't remember them doing it this young, but they do it for A&L at their check-ups too.

Really? Wow. Our doctor has never mentioned anything about his weight and the nurse stopped measuring it when he was 18 months. He's never received prescription medication so it's not necessary unless there's a problem. With Daryn they only checked her weight for proper medicine dosage if she was ill. I've never heard of a BMI for children.

I mean, they probably have it in their computer. They always show me his growth chart and stuff, but they've never specifically told me his BMI.

I don't know about the peds, but at all Rylan specialists they give me a paper with her BMI. Ever since she was teeny tiny.

I would seriously contemplate leaving my pedi if they started talking to me about her BMI. Am I not the only one that thinks that's completely inappropriate?

Mine does now.

I imagine the doctors are starting to do it now as obesity is a real health concern, trying to get the awareness out there.

I looked it up earlier out of curiosity. What I read said that up to 2 years, it's common to use the height vs weight charts as a measure of growth, and that after 2 years, it is now common to use BMI (adjusted for age and gender) instead. Never really heard that before. I guess since we haven't been to a wellness appointment since she was 2, I don't really know what our ped does after 2 years old.

Quote:
CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend the use of BMI to screen for overweight and obesity in children beginning at 2 years old.

For children, BMI is used to screen for obesity, overweight, healthy weight, or underweight. However, BMI is not a diagnostic tool. For example, a child may have a high BMI for age and sex, but to determine if excess fat is a problem, a health care provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.

Mine did BMI with Connor at his 3 year appointment. She never said anything about it, but we get the duplicate copy of his chart at each visit and it was written in there.

Health form I found in my desk drawer. It was Olivias...from one of her well baby appts. She was only*6 months, but it has her BMI on it. My dr never TOLD me what it was, but im sure they all have a record of it in their file.

Ava had a waaay late wellness check up this week and the dr told me her BMI and they are graphing/charting it....standard practice. THe dr said they do it now to help identify kids that are at risk for obesity.
