Confession, sleeping on my back is the only position I am comfortable in sleeping in. And it is also the position I am NOT SUPPOSED to sleep in which sucks even more.
Since I toss and turn at night from side to side, in the middle of the night I woke up and ended up on my back to give my hips a break. I was only planning to do this for a minute or so until...I fell back asleep!! I woke up like oh CRAP and immediately went back to my side.
I was never a back sleeper but now I can't stop myself. I always wake up finding myself on my back. It's terrible and I feel so bad. I'm planning to buy a pregnancy pillow really soon. I hope that helps me out a little.
I understand! I love sleeping on my back and it's so hard not to. I keep waking up on my back though on accident, I just do it in my sleep. The only thing is I get really dizzy and lightheaded now if I'm on my back for a while and that's what wakes me up. Oh, how I miss lying on my back!
I have woken up on my back before too, even with a pregnancy pillow. Most of the night, I know I am on my side sleeping b/c I rotate every so often through the night but I think between the hours of 3am - 6am, I must have flipped to my back not knowing, eek!
My midwife gave me permission to sleep on my back. It's absolutely the only way I CAN sleep. Moving from side to side makes me feel like my insides are being torn apart.
I don't think it is a problem until it starts making you feel light headed. Until then, the baby/uterus doesn't weigh enough to cut off your blood supply. It's different for everyone.

I did not know that you weren't suppose to sleep on your back!!!?!? Hmm.. lol I don't becuase its more comfy on my sides.. but wow i just learned something!
I'm usually a side sleeper, but lately, I LOVE sleeping on my back! I have been too, just following suggestions of if I get light headed, etc, to move off of my back and sleep on my side.
That's going to be sooo difficult... the only way I want to sleep lately, is on my back, with my leg draped over my husband's thigh. It's sad.
Maybe you could put a pillow under your back, and lay onto one side of it, so you're KIND of on your side, but it kind of feels like you're on your back? I might do that eventually.
I agree I dont think its a problem and if it became a problem your body would let you know. I couldnt sleep on my back even if I wanted to because when I am on my back my sciatica pain is SO awful!
Before I go to bed at night I put a big pillow slightly under my bum behind me on the edge of the bed. That way if I roll over it at least props me up a little bit. Sounds weird but its helped me some, now sometimes I kick that thing in the floor in my sleep and wake up on my back but I think i'm finally starting to get used to it!
I wedge myself in between a body pillow and a pillow behind me like described above. I've noticed if I lay on my back I feel funny after awhile. I think your body will tell you if it's been too long. I hope you can find a position that will work for you because we need all the sleep we can get right now.
I noodle myself into whatever position I can squeeze into between the kids in the middle of the night. Trupe starts out the night in bed, but he likes to get on the couch when he wakes up to pee in the middle of the night (weirdo, he likes the change of scenery he says). Israel sleeps between me and the wall, and then sometime after Trupe leaves the room Ele, and sometimes Trupie get in bed with me. I wake up on my back a lot, and while I haven't found it uncomfortable yet, I'm not sure the baby likes it much. S/he kicks up a storm when I wake up like that.
With at least one of my pg's, I used to wedge myself between pillows, but I don't have the room/luxury anymore.

I use a TON of pillows, and kinda prop myself up to a reclined position. I'll make sure the pillows start under my shoulders. I've found that helps with the dizzy feeling, so I think it's safe. It also keeps my hips from getting sore from laying on my side.
normally i'm a side sleeper but here lately i wake up on my back ALL THE TIME! i don't know what it is but hopefully my body will tell me when it's no longer a good idea.
I was told by the OB that I will know when I can no longer sleep on my back because my body will wake me up to tell me to stop. So I wouldn't worry about it until then. I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow and I've just now noticed that it's uncomfortable to sleep on my back, not because it makes me light headed or my legs fall asleep, but because it feels like something really heavy is pushing down on my tummy.

I actually have been finding that sleeping on my back makes me sore in the morning. I used to be a back or belly sleeper, but now I find myself sleeping on my right side. It usually gives me all sorts of hip pain, but so far so good.
When DD crawls into bed with us in the middle of the night, and I'm too tired to put her back to bed, I usually just sleep however I can manage to sleep. She tends to cuddle a lot, lol.
I am also a back sleeper during pregnancy. I agree with the pp that said that your body will wake you up. Mine does and I find myself lightheaded. My best advice would be to use pillows but they make me uncomfortable but I hope they don't for you.
