Ugghhhh! My appointment is supposed to be October 7th, but we are applying for state aid and I just spoke to the lady today and she told me that she hasn't even entered my application into the system yet. If I go to the appointment without approval, we will have to pay $150 cash, and then another $200 or so for bloodwork. Once we are approved for aid, then they would go back and cover it, but they don't reimburse you until after delivery, and we just can't afford that right now.

Then, on top of that, the lady told me it can take up to 45 days to process my application. There is NO WAY I am waiting 7+ weeks to get an ultrasound. I would be 12 WEEKS by then. She said she should have then all processed within 2 weeks, because she is retiring but that means if she can't get it done, we are screwed.

I just want to see the baby and make sure everything is ok, but now we have to wait AT LEAST another 2 weeks, if not more. I am going to be 8 or 9 weeks before I even get to see a doctor.

We would stick with private insurance, but it cost us $5,000+ dollars to have DD with private insurance and there is no way we can afford that again. Ughhh I just don't know what to do!!

Sorry. We are in the same boat kinda. We do not have insurance DH was laid off almost 2yrs ago and we are both in school full time because he couldn't find anything. I applied for state insurance 2 days ago and they told me it would be at most 20 days before I got approved. 45 days seems awfully long especially since you are pregnant. They usually try to get those takin care of ASAP for prenatal care.
Hugs!!!

Thanks for the kind words, ladies. DH and I talked, and for our initial appointment, we are just going to borrow the money from my inlaws and pay them back when we get reimbursed. I should recieve an approval before my second appointment, but if not, then we will push that one back.

Have you looked into school/student insurance? I got a full year of coverage for around $1200...and it's actually good insurance through Aetna.

What state are you in? In Virginia pregnant women have to be given a response within 10 days given that all verifications have been turned in.

I am in California. They have up to 45 days before they have to do anything. It sucks.

We can't afford it. Dh and I have both been looking for a job, but no one is hiring where we are or they are and they won't work around our school. Dh finally got on at the school making min. wage for 12 hrs a week. Needless to say this baby was not planned, but apparently its meant to be when we were using protection. About 3 more years and DH will have a job. Can't wait!!!

We've come up with a new plan.

I've rescheduled the appointment for the 15th. At that point, I should have my approval and if not, I will ask they to hold the charge until I get the approval. If they can't, I'll reschedule for 1 more week and then we will just pay cash if we don't have our approval yet. After thinking about it, I am only going to be 6 weeks, 1 day when my appointment was originally scheduled, and at that point it may be to early to see a heartbeat so it seems a little silly to pya cash for an appointment that may just end up causing us more worry.

So, cross your fingers I have my approval in hand by the 15th! My case worker will be retired by then, so there isn't any reason she shouldn't have goten everything taken care of.

I'm so glad you were able to come up with a solution that leaves you with less worry. I'll keep my fingers crossed that everything works out.

Fingers crossed here too! And I wouldn't want an ultrasound at 6 weeks either if I were you! There is too much room for "well we can't see the heartbeat, PANIC- but it could just mean you are earlier than you thought, etc etc etc" I hate that uncertainty!!!
Besides, early ultrasounds are a relatively new thing anyway When I had my first only 8 years ago, you didn't even GET an ultrasound until you were 20 weeks unless you were high risk. Now everyone gets one, but its not really necessary Just comforting!
Also, if you do end up having to pay cash, be sure to ask the Dr for their Cash price- my OB's cash price is only $75 per visit, although the price for people with insurance is much higher (because of all the write offs or some other such non-sense) Its worth asking, right?
AND GOOD LUCK!! We were students too when we got pg with my first, and that 9 mo of pregnancy was sooo hard, but totally worth every second of it My DH couldn't find a job either and I got laid off at 5 mo pregnant, and no one would hire me because I wouldn't commit to coming back after having the baby. It was tough, and tight financially- (are you on WIC? Its AMAZING!) but you can do it!!!!

Our clinic accepts pending medicaid as long as you get a letter from the office. if I was you I would just call and talk to the clinics finance office and see if they can set up a payment plan with you.
