I am going with cheap this time around - Prefolds (around $25 a dozen) and flats (around $20 a dozen)! Nothing like my $25+ each diapers! And if I want to get fancy I'll put "it" in a bamboo velour flat! Prefolds are workhorses (especially the right brand) and flats last from newborn to potty training with the right folds. I do have some convenience dipes for daddy/church/babysitter, but I really don't mind folding. I want the flats though because it will be easier to rinse with only one layer, hence no chemical burns again!
I think cloth diapering a girl might be a bit easier, but I'm not sure. The girls weren't cloth diapered, only DS. It was always his boy bits that got red. I wish I could have done DD2, she had eczema really bad. If you have a hard time with keeping baby dry, you can always cut fleece rectangles and lay them inside like a liner. It helps wick moisture away.
Yes, one diaper here and there counts. Especially in my/your pocket book! Target diapers have worked for us, but they are getting boring. Thank goodness for potty training!!
