So I have been so excited about my name for my daughter ever since we came up with it. Story is I dreamed all about it being a girl and her name being Ariana. We hadn't been able to decide on ANYTHING we both liked, so I woke up and told DH and he was like "I LIKE it!" I was surprised of course because he's normally really picky about names (as am I, of course)
Anyway so I am a BIG music buff and was a singer for years, so I decided we would call her "Aria" for short because its a musical name and has a beautiful ring to it and I have NEVER heard that as a name. Other than the Arya in one of my favorite book series (Eragon)

ANYWAY, so I was telling some girls (14 year olds) at my church that I adore (they babysit for me, and help out around the house when I am sick and stuff) anyway they were like EEWWW. I was shocked, and like "what"? They said there is some stupid teeney bopper show on TV called "Pretty Little Liars" and some hoochie on it is apparently name "Aria". I looked it up and sure enough!
So now I am mad. I totally thought it would be this unique name. Now I don't know whether to keep it or do what. I don't want her to grow up and have someone go "Oh, you are named after that hoochie on TV" ya know?
What would you guys do? Has anyone actually SEEN the show?

I've never seen the show but one thing to keep in mind is that the show's main audience (at least from what I've heard, maybe it has a wider audience?) is going to be 14 years older than your daughter, so I don't think most people she'll interact (friends, classmates, teachers) with for awhile will have seen the show. By the time she's around that age group the show will probably be a fairly distant memory if they remember it at all.

Personally, I love the name Ariana and "Aria" is a beautiful nickname. I would stick with it but at the same time if it really, really bothers you I wouldn't fight it to the point where it's a denial kind of thing... for example, there was a name I really loved and then the first thing my friend did was point out that there was a popular porn star with that name. At first I was like "well I don't care, that's the name I like" but it reached a point where I couldn't honestly say I felt comfortable with the name anymore and had to admit that it was time to change.

My roomie watches EVERY week. I'll ask her about it when she gets home. But I knew a real Aria, not a fictional charactor. And she was the most well-rounded, even-tempered, tolerant, kind, compassionate and all around awesome person I knew in high school. She was rocked by world disasters and actually DID something to help out in some way. She always listened to music from the 60's and 70's about peace, but was the biggest Beastie Boys fan I have ever met. We drifted apart after high school but I loved her sooo much!!! I hope this helps balance out the hoochie side of Aria.

And never listen to kids about naming a baby. When I was 12 my aunt had a daughter and named her Gwynneth, Gwynnie for short. I HATED it and had no shame in telling her that, either. Now after my own fighting for the name I love, I realized that was so rude! Anyways, I loooooooooove that name now and I am a little jealous she beat me to it. Plus the name fits the girl so well.

Sometimes you just have to say screw everyone else and do what you want. Idk if you have read about my name deal, but my bestie is having her son in April and naming him Seth. Our other friends CANNOT let it go that we are goiong to have Seth Rogen around all the time. But eventually they'll get over it and associate Seth and Roghan with out kids instead of the hairy actor. Just as those little girls will get over the hoochie Aria association and begin to connect Aria with your baby.

I wouldn't worry about it. Like PP said, your daughter will grow up in a different age group than the audience, and your peers are probably not really the show's audience either. I don't think you should give it up just because of that. Also, my cousin has a cute daughter named Aria. She's probably about 7 or 8.

I wouldnt worry about it, like others have said, its such a big difference between the group she will grow up knowing. And i dont think that Pretty Little Liars (a teen based show) will last more then 2 more years, and i highly doubt will be a super memerable show in the entertainment world.

There is another show with a character names Arianna (not called Aria), The Cleavland Show on FOX after Family Guy. Arianna is the bears bear wife. lol. But thats th eonly thing i think of. And anyways i dont think really anyone except teenagers says Oh you named her ____, like from the show _______? I didnt even notice the Cleavland show resemblance till just now when you said something.

I would worry about it

I think it is a very pretty name and I wouldn't worry about it either. I have never even heard of the show and I doubt people are going to think you named her after that. If you like the name, go with it

Aww sweetie, TV programs will come and go, but your child's name will last her forever. It is a beautiful name! Teenagers tend to be a bit dramatic (I taught 8th grade for a stint) with their reactions.... ask them in a week and they will decide they love it too!

Thanks guys, I feel a lot better about it today LOL I decided its what you are naming them after that counts not what others interpret, right? I mean I didn't even THINK of seth Rogan when I saw your baby's name TreeLove I thought COOL what a different name! It does make me feel better to know there are "good" Aria's out there too!
Mostly I am going with the idea that no adults, or kids under 12 are going to have even HEARD of the show- let alone know the characters names LOL Dumb to worry so much about a name, I know- but I know people who HATE their names soooo much and I would HATE to do that to my child, ya know?

I totally wouldn't worry about it. It's just a stupid TV show and if you were going to base how you name your DD on a TV show, then you would have a hard time finding ANY name that works.

I love Ariana, if our baby was a girl that is a name we were thinking about using. I would keep it. I don't watch that show or know anyone named Ariana but I really love it.

Wow, im suprised no one has written saying they watch the show. I watch this every week and my husband even likes it! I wouldnt necessarily say it is aimed at 14 year olds either. The character, Aria is played by a beautiful acress (Lucy Hale) and the character is not a "hoochie." I am suprised you are affected so much by a 14 year olds opinion on naming your baby anyway. Ariana/Aria is a beautiful name and if you and your husband love it, dont let anyones opinion change that. Many people (including me) get their name ideas from TV shows, no one will think thats weird.

It was really just their actual reaction that bothered me, not really their opinion. They were like EEEWWW don't name her THAT! (Like three or four of them) It just kind of caught me off guard, ya know? Not having seen the show myself I didn't know what to think. And these are girls that I see ALL the time- they are my neighbors and friends kids.
It really helps to have someone who has SEEN the show (and isn't 14) respond LOL. Now I feel much better about it
Oh and the only reason I care about the whole TV thing, is one of my BF's named her son Sawyer and she says at LEAST once a week someone is like- why did you name him after the creep on Lost -- She had never even SEEN the show and had no idea- She said it drives her crazy... but I think a LOT more people have seen lost than "Pretty Little Liars".
Thanks!

This is why I don't share names with anyone before baby is born! I just don't want to hear other's opinions.

I agree that I would keep the name and not worry about it, it's a different age group that watch that show and I'm sure with every name you pick there will be a negative connotation somewhere, but who cares? After a few weeks when she's born when you hear her name all you will think about is her.

My co worker has a daughter Ariana and calls her Ari for short. I think it's a lovely name.

I haven't seen the show but if it were me and I loved the name I would just keep it. If she doesn't like the nickname as she gets older she can always stick to Ariana and not have to deal with the comparison. By the time she is old enough the show will probably be long gone anyways. Go with what you love and stick with it. I love the name Ariana.

I watch PLL every week and even thought of using the name Aria because of it (DH hates it so I can't) She is my favorite on the show and is really down to earth and far from a hoochie

Thanks! Again, it really helps to hear from someone who is an ADULT and has seen the show LOL

I've decided the next time someone says something against the name I am going to say "Well, I didn't exactly decide my name choice based on what I thought you would think- but thanks for your opinion"
