I am going to do covers and prefolds for the NB stage. How many newborn covers/prefolds should I be buying? I know there are some pro cloth diaper mommies here

I've not done prefolds (or diapered a newborn yet for that matter!) but I read somewhere that around 24 prefolds and 6 or so covers were recommended? Maybe someone who has experience will come along and answer.

A large part of it also depends on how often you plan to wash? You can get away with a lot less if you will be washing daily....or every other day. You'll need more if you'd like to stretch it out longer.

For the first 8 weeks I'll be home so I would like be able to wash every other day. When I go back to work at 8 weeks, I'll need to go Friday-Sunday without washing and then was Monday am since I work all 12 hour shifts.

they say a newborn can use 10 diapers per day, so if you need to go 3 to 4 days at a stretch, you'll need 30 to 40 prefolds and less covers. The covers can be used multiple times unless they get soaked. But you could always rinse those out in the sink and let air dry to stretch it.

We're aiming for 20 or so diapers of each size and maybe 10 covers? I haven't decided yet. We'll do laundry every other day.

I don't use cloth, but newborns poop so much, I'd make sure you had plenty!

I only plan on having about 4 covers to use, but you might need more if poop leaks out of prefolds easier. I have all fitteds to use and never had poop get on our covers, so we only used 1-2/day and we'll have enough diapers to wash every other day.

I had a dozen prefolds and about 8 covers that would last 2 days. I need to get some new prefolds and make some more covers.

So far I have a dozen prefolds, 6 kissaluvs size 0 fitteds and no covers yet I'm thinking 4-6 covers to start, and I want 24-36 newborn dipes. I'm debating if I want the last group to be more fitteds or more prefolds. I've never cloth diapered a newborn so I don't know!

I would have at least 36 diapers if you're doing prefolds, and probably 8 covers. If you do prefolds folded up and put in the cover you'll need a lot more (than I did) because poop will get on the inside of the covers.

With Phinny we used fitteds and I only had 4 newborn covers, that was plenty. I had a LOT of diapers though, I don't want to have to wash every day or every other day. Newborns can go through 12 diapers per day, and you have to change a lot at night too.

what Katie said!

I had 36 prefolds for Dalton and 6 covers. If you have regular size prefolds you can use those for a newborn too, although they are a bit bulkier than infant size prefolds. Depending on your LO's size/shape and the fold you do, you can find a way to keep most poop in the diaper and not on the cover, but it's one of those that you sort of have to try out different ones to see what what works best for your LO.

This time I have 6 KL0's and 5 HH AIO minis and will still have probably about 36 prefolds.
