I think in todays economy we are all bargain shoppers in one way or another. I am a huge consignment, garage sale, flea market nut. But I know there are somethings that really shouldn't be bought used.

In your opinion or as facts what should NOT be bought used?

Crib- if it is dropside. They have all been banned and some people do not know that. And I believe some bassinets too have had a huge recall on them. I agree with Leslie on the mattress too.

I agree on carseats--not only could it have been in a car accident or dropped or otherwise abused or misused, carseats have expiration dates, I feel much safer knowing my seat's history.

And after seeing what has come out of my kid in her bed, I have to agree with Leslie that a used matress is something I would avoid if I could afford to.

And ditto to the cribs too, I don't think I could get a used crib unless I was 100% certain that I was up to date on any recalls and would have time to monitor future recals since you won't be notified of any as a second-hand consumer.

Walkers and bath chairs are the other things I wouldn't buy second hand, but I also wouldn't buy them new--too many kids have been seriously injured in accidents in walkers and bath chairs that I don't want to use them.

I think cloth diapers are a matter of personal comfort. I would be ok with buying second hand, stripping and washing myself before using, but my DH doesn't like the idea (even though he's ok with our kids re-using the older one's diaper's when they out grow them)

Clothes, toys, swings, wraps, bibs, blankets, monitors, rockers, changing tables, dressers, decorations, coats, hats, strollers, infant bath tubs, books, movies, high chairs, jumpers/exersaucers, etc are all things I look for second hand.

Pretty much anything that doesn't pose a serious safety/recall issue and that can be washed or sterilized is fair game for second hand shopping for me!

I wouldn't buy anything used... Idk, I'm a big germ person and the idea of some other baby peeing all over my babies clothes and it maybe still being in there freaks me OUT

I'm not sure what I'll do as far as buying things used. This is our first and although new things are more expensive I hope the big stuff will last through all of our kids. This may be wishful thinking though

Once we have our showers and see what all we have in gift cards I Will probably look at second-hand stores for stuff that doesn't get broken easily.

I will not buy a car seat used.

I will buy a mattress. Most baby ones are plastic coated. As long as there are no cracks in it, I do not care... but I will clean it with bleach when I get home.

I loved my walker! Then again, my child always remained in my sight.

As long as I can clean it or wash it, I do not mind it being used. With the exception of a car seat.

I will buy most things used as long as they can be sanitized first. Used car seats are a big no!

For me it depends who it's coming from ~ like if I know the person, then it's a bit different.. and if they are the only owner of the stuff. Carseats are definitely something to not buy second hand.

i WILL NOT buy a car seat used.

clothes i'm fine with as long as they're in good condition.

cloth diapers i will consider used as long as they come from someone i know, and i would of course strip/sanitize them before using them

toys and other baby gear, as long as it hasn't been recalled (and i've been known to look it up on my phone in the middle of a consignment store, lol) i'm ok with, and i'll clean it really good before using it

I am a huge consignment and garage sale shopper. I get lots of clothes and toys at these kinds of sales. I would never buy a car seat used - too dangerous. Any toys that can't be sterilized I wouldn't buy either. I don't buy used shoes for my kid - clothes are one thing - but used shoes creep me out!

I'm not a big used item buyer, but my MIL is and finds great deals for us. Things I would NOT use are really what others have said: car seat (we aren't even using DD's because I can't read the exp. date on it and think it is a five year time frame and we'll be right at it), dropside cribs (cannot be used at all anymore), high chairs unless I knew the person and it had all its straps for safety, bath seats because some people aren't very clean and might let mold or mildew grow (GROSS!!!!), teething toys, bottles... I am sure there are other things, but it would just have to see some things to make the decision.
