Is the Mirena safe while breastfeeding? I've had bad effects of bc pills and depo shots, I turn very very bit**y. But I want something after the baby is here until df decides on what he wants to do

I found this site where your milk supply could be decreased. kellymom.com :: Birth Control and Breastfeeding

I would speak to your doctor and see what they suggest.

I know a lot of people who've used it while BFing...but if there's a chance of milk decreasing, maybe since you'll be 6-8 weeks PP it won't matter as much. Or you could offset it with herbs.

I researched IUD's and it did say it's safe while breastfeeding, but if it does descrease your milk supply than maybe I would talk to you dr about it. But you won't get it til 6-8 weeks after baby so hopefully you'll have your supply up and it won't effect it. I'm getting mirena hopefully, DH is dead set on this being our last but I'm only 24, will be 25 when baby is born, and I don't want to make such a permanent decision when I'm this young, so I want to get an IUD that'll last for 5 years by than i'll be 30 and if we haven't decided to have more kids by than, than he can go ahead and get snipped..

It is approved to use while BFing. It's put in between 6-8 weeks PP, so your milk supply should be well established and not affected as much, but I've heard of people starting fenugreek and mother's milk tea right before getting it put in just to counteract any decrease in supply it has. You body will likely level out after it's inserted too, it's just that first bit of hormones your body has to get used to.

If you've had reactions to hormonal bc's before, I'd look into paragard over Mirena. My body doesn't tolerate bc well and I got the Mirena in Nov 2006. I bled, heavily, every single day until finally having it removed in June 2007.

But yes, it is considered ok while bfeeding.

What is paragard? I had horrible reactions to the pill but we don't want to use condoms and with my age I don't want to get pregnant again and I don't want dh to have a vasectomy.
