Now I know this is a debatable topic and I'm not posting for any debate... My pedi has given me the blessing to introduce cows milk and skip any formula supplementation. She tested Sam's hemoglobin levels and said they were nearly perfect. I bought whole milk and gave him two separate 2 oz servings in his sippy cup. He gobbled it down with no problem. I have continued this past week with nursing, solids, and about 6 oz of whole milk. I am slowly trying to wean him. My first goal was to cut out the ridiculous amount of morning nursing Sam was doing. It's pretty clear that he will whine to see if I'll let him and I was giving in way too much. As you know from my other post, we are in the midst of sleeping regression, so I have limited morning nursing to just once when he wakes. It's now noon and I haven't nursed him (he had breakfast of pears and oatmeal and two oz whole milk). My plan is to feed him lunch and then let him nurse. I'd like to get to three nursings- morning, mid day and just before bedtime, and then once during the night. That would be a massive improvement. I'm trying to up solids as well.
He has had no adverse reaction to whole milk at all, and I feel like we are moving at a good pace so far. I know a few of you introduced whole milk early with your other LOs. How was your experience with weaning? Also, has anyone else introduced whole milk?
Again, this thread is not a debate thread, so please be respectful of my decision. I am just looking for other experiences for those who introduced whole milk before one year.
I tried mentioning doing something like this with the doctor I met with last week. Adeline has the dairy protein allergy, so I was trying to ask what I can give her, and if I can start now to try to supplement her, but he just came back and told me to wait until she is a year.
It sounds like it is going well for you, so that is really great!
Thanks for responding, Tammy! How many times are you nursing Beth? I have gotten it down the last couple days to four times. Morning, 3pm, just before bed, and once during the night. Which do you think I should drop off next and how long before I try? The 3 pm one I usually wait as long as I can until he won't take no for an answer. Since you obviously have a lot of experience, can you advise me about your weaning experiences? I have no clue what I'm doing. My pedi recommended I go cold turkey and I know that is not right for me or Sam at this point.
We're working on the same thing. We started by introducing whole milk in a sippy cup with meals - not as a replacement for formula/bottles. He LOVES it! As he's been eating more and more real food, we cut out a bottle feeding and added more milk at the meal. He was down to three bottles - morning, evening and night. This week we cut out the morning bottle feeding and added in an extra morning snack with milk. So far so good. The goal is to get him off formula by his first birthday - but we'll see...he LOVES his before bed bottle.
What do you do for snacks? I have had trouble finding full fat yogurt, but I plan on getting some. Any other ideas for snacks? I know adding in snacks will help me lose that midday nursing sooner!
I want to switch over to whole milk, but my pedi said to wait until a year. I have thought about starting to introduce it closer to 11 months. It sounds like Sam is more than ready for the switch and your pedi gave you the go-ahead, which is awesome!
I have heard some people say that for snacks they will give puffs or fruits that are soft enough they can pick up and gum.
Taylor gets a banana and puffs for snack at daycare. What about there Gerber yogurt bites for a snack? My Pedi also said any yogurt is fine, it doesn't have to be full of fat or anything special. She suggest Activia to help Taylor "go" but she can't have any yogurt yet.

I nurse her once or twice a day. I work and pump some also. So she still nurses and usually gets one bag of pumped breastmilk, but I've fallen short on pumping so my stash was dwindling, which encouraged us to try milk, that and she was almost 10 mos. I've started at around 9 or 10 mos with my others. Some of them were totally not interested and would not take milk at all until they started eating cereal. The pedi with them told me as long as there were eating cheese, yogurt or other foods with calcium they would be fine. Of course I nursed them for a year or over. I really just kinda follow their lead. Some of mine have been picky and we would have to ease into new foods/milk and such and others would eat or drink almost anything new and I could just give them what I wanted whenever. She has handled it great. No fussiness and her poops didn't change from what they did when we started solids.

Have you tried making your own yogurt? It's actually really easy, and you can use whatever kind of milk you'd like in it . Here's a link: cultivating domesticity: crockpot yogurt

I introduced Tyler to whole milk at 10 months and by the time he was 11 months he was completly on it and no formula. Alyssa is about to be 10 months in a couple weeks so we will give her a few oz here and there but will keep her on formula a bit longer. By year old she if all goes well she will be on milk completely.
I was thinking about starting whole milk with Anthony. He isnt interested in the formula anymore and nursing takes to long for him to get anything.
I think at this point its totally fine.
