I was just wondering for those that feed baby oatmeal do you use the baby food (like Gerber) or do you take regular oats and grind them and give them to baby?

I was with my friend at the store and they were out of the gerber baby oatmeal. My friend said oh just use the quaker one. So she ground up some of the oats and I used it today and it worked out pretty good. It turned out thicker than the baby stuff.

I tried milling my own but it didn't turn out so well. It was too thick & more like paste, even when I kept adding formula. We use the Gerber kind & it works nicely.

So I milled my own today. I used 1 cup of oats and 2 cups of water. I milled it then added it to the pot with water. Brought it to a boil covered, then covered it and cooked on low for 20 minutes. Stirring regularly and it came out perfectly. I did it with a 1/2 cup and 4 cups water which what it called for what it was way runny.

When we start solids I will be using Nestle, we dont have gerber here, but same idea. The only reason I will be using cereal at all is because its fortified and at 6 months babies have used up their iron stores and start requiring it, so Ill be using the cereal only as a means to get him the iron he needs. Im not sure if regular oats have the nutrition thats tailored to meet babies needs at this stage. Does anyone know if they are?

I just looked at the iron %-age on the baby oatmeal and the regular oatmeal and the baby one for babies under 1 it says 45% iron whereas the regular kind only has 10%. so maybe i'll just combine them. I'll ask my dr tomorrow what he thinks.

I asked the dr today about adult oatmeal and the gerber baby oatmeal. Since Joshua is still breastfed the dr did not recommend he use the adult oatmeal only b/c he needs the extra iron and vitamin D. So guess I won't be using adult oatmeal right now.

I'll mill my own but I also have a package of organic oatmeal in the cabinet, too, so I have options.
