I just got home from driving 30 miles to the flipping ER. My poor Katelyn screamed for 3 straight hours, had to have to her eyes irrigated at home AND the ER, have a piece of paper stuck in her eye to check the PH level, and has to have salve put in her eyes every 6 hours for the next WEEK.
All because of sunscreen.
Specifically, Coppertone water babies spf 50 waterproof.

So we went to the lake, I put her sunscreen on her like always- no hands, no forehead. Her eyes started to get puffy while we were at the lake, we figured she was tired and came home. She rubbed and rubbed and rubbed her eyes, they got redder and redder, then the screaming started.
I spent forever in the bathroom with her washing every bit of it off and flushing her eyes over and over but an hour later it looked worse and she was still screaming.
Called poison control, they recommended bringing her into the ER immediately to have her eyes flushed. They called ahead and let the hospital know we were coming so we didnt have to wait.

It was HORRIBLE and I am beyond angry that a sunscreen that supposed to be SAFE for babies burned the crap out of my poor baby girls eyes.
A whole freaking WEEK of antibiotic salve and she has to see an eye dr within the next few days to make sure everything is ok.

Coppertone is getting a NASTY letter from me and I will NEVER EVER use their sunscreen again.

Caroline I did cry on the way to the ER. Hearing her horrible, shrieking little screams just pierced my heart.
Rae she's sleeping right now. She's gonna be starving when she wakes up or I wake her up but shes had an awful day and I'm going to let her sleep for a bit.
They put some stuff in her eyes to make them stop burning.

Sleeping is a good sign, it means she's not in pain anymore. The poor little sweetheart.

I hate sunscreen with a passion. This gives me another reason to add to my list of why.

Omg how scary! When we went camping Tristan and his cousin got sunscreen in their eyes and they were complete wrecks because of it. Tristan was so upset that I had to take him home and give him a bath to get it all off. He just kept rubbing his eyes and crying and it made me feel awful. I hope she is feeling better today!

Shes In good spirits today but her eyes are still pretty puffy. The red is gone though.
I might have to try and take a picture, she kind of looks like she has bags under her eyes like an old lady
Called her ped this morning and she said unless the swelling isn't gone in 2 days or it seems like she's having trouble seeing we can wait to check her eyes at her 1 yr appt. Since the ph was only a little off and her eyes were flushed right away she's probably fine.
The ointment for her eyes can make her vision blurry though :/

Oh NO!! I am going to cry just reading this! I can't even imagine what that was like for either of you. I am seriously thanking the heavens that hasn't happened to Will. I've only put sunscreen on him twice but it only takes one time! I'm so sorry!

this happened to bob the first time she had on sun screen. she got it on her hands (form her legs) and then in her eyes, and she kept rubbing them. she looked like a swollen chipmunk for 3 days. i didn't take her in to the doc though.

How scary. We put sunscreen on Abigail when we went to the zoo a week or two ago and luckily she didn't have a reaction like that. None of my kids have had that reaction towards sun-screen. Thank goodness because that sounds soooo awful!
