She really fights it while putting it on her and cries like she's in pain. The Dr with the helmet people just made it look so easy. He just kinda popped it on her. It took me a few attempts to get it right. In hindsight, I should have asked him to hang around in the room while I tried to put it on her. Maybe that would have helped me lol. It's not like just putting on a biking helmet and buckling it under your chin. This is more labor intensive and a little more complex than it looks lol. Once it's on and she's been comforted, she just doesn't seem to notice it at all lol . She didn't really even get fussy while they were trying it on her in the prosthetics office. So far so good. The only things we need to practice with it is putting it on and nursing with it on. I do really miss her cute bald head though lol. It's the type of helmet that has a hole in the top and that is just big enough that I can sneak in a kiss there lol.

Edit: One more pic. Please excuse my drunken, zombie like appearance lol she kept me up until 2 am last night and woke me up at just before 9 am

(Can everyone see the pictures? These pics are linked from my facebook which is set to private.)

Aww, cutie! Piper has her scan Friday for her helmet. Hopefully she'll get it soon.

It didn't take us long. They didn't scan Lily. They did the old fashioned plaster of paris casting which she hated and I do mean hated lol. We had the casting done, then 10 days later, we had our first fitting and came home with the helmet and so far so good. She still doesn't seem to notice it. I'm just shocked and very pleasantly surprised lol. She's just her usual adorable self. I think I finally also got the technique down after a few tries.

Seriously it is SO cute on her lol
Sorry if I missed this or didn't read it, but how long during the day does she have to wear it and do you know how many weeks/months she has to have it?

Right now we are still doing the acclimation schedule with her. We are working up to 23 hours on and 1 hour off. By day 5 she will be wearing it full time. As for length of time total that she will be wearing it depends on a few factors. If she hits a growth spurt soon, it could be as short as a month or as long as 3 months. There's really no telling, but the average is 3 months.

If anyone missed the reason why she needs it is she has plagiocephaly which is a flattening of one side of her head. Her case is pretty mild so she probably won't need the helmet as long as some babies do.

Piper had her scan today and she is getting the butterfly helmet too! I think it's the exact same one. It should be in sometime next week. She was a CRAB during the scan though.. ugh. Here is a pic with the mesh thing they had to put in her head:

She'll have to wear hers 23 hours a day too. I think hers is a little more severe. I have a feeling she's going to have to wear it a long time.. blah.

Not Lily, but this is about what Lily looks like from this angle:

http://blog.ergobaby.com/wp-content/...phalypic-2.jpg

Lily's helmet only took 10 days to make from the day of the scan/casting appointment. We are going back again this Thurs to check and make sure there are no problems with the fit or anything. Then the appointments will be spaced out about every 3 weeks or so and may be further spaced out.

The minimum discrepancy for a baby to be a candidate for a helmet is an 8mm difference between the two diagonal measurements of the head, if that makes any sense. She has a discrepancy of 10mm. He (the prosthetics specialist) said she is one of his mildest cases, barely qualifying for the helmet. It's enough of a difference that it's noticed though.

What's proving to be a harder thing to deal with than getting her used to wearing the helmet is peoples' reactions towards it and me. Some are inferring I am shallow and vain for "putting her through all this stress". I just tell them to shove off and that I am doing what I feel is best for my baby. She is a girl after all and will want to do her hair some day. Her head shape will matter to her.

How is it shallow and vain? I can't believe ANYONE could say that and actually mean it. Obviously, they haven't had to deal with this before. Ugh, that really frustrates me.

They just don't quite get it. One of my internet friends actually said "Everybody wants that 'perfect' baby.." That made me mad.

Ugh, that would have really made me mad. Piper's head looks a lot like that picture, but on the other side of her head. Like you said, people just don't get it. I had a friend who's daughter needed one and insurance wouldn't cover it because they said it wasn't medically necessary. Ended up costing them $3000 which is insane! Thankfully our insurance is covering 90% of this. I can't get over how much these things cost!

Piper's pediatrician got us started. She sent us to a neurologist who then sent us to a physical therapist. They both agreed that she should have the helmet along with the physical therapy. We then went to an orthopedist who is doing all the helmet stuff. Piper has to be seen every two weeks after she gets the helmet.. ugh what fun.

I would talk about it with her ped. and see what they think. Good luck!

We are so glad our insurance is covering it all. No copays or anything even. Our insurance is the type that it only covers "medically necessary" stuff, as well. Maybe it's not so much medically necessary as it covers things ordered by her pediatrician? That's weird to me. Wow!!! $3000!!!!! I can't imagine.. I think this certainly qualifies as "medically necessary".

Same with Crystal kind of. Her pedi noticed it when she was only a few days old and he recommended the helmet and gave us an official referral to the orthopedics place. Her pedi also referred her to a physical therapist for her torticollis and her physical therapist agrees that she needs a helmet.

A good pediatrician trusts mom's instincts. If yours isn't doing that, or worse, completely ignoring a problem you see, maybe its time to find Myah a new pedi. If you would, you're welcome to either post a picture of her head looking down towards the top of her head here or PM it to me and I'll give you my non-expert opinion lol. If you say she needs it, then she probably does. Just get pushy about it.

When she wakes up I will try to get a photo. My first daughter was kinda tilted but grew out of it. Everyone keeps saying that about Myah but it just looks so different to me. Plus the other day I put her in front of a mirror and she had a tilt there too... I know if it doesn't get fixed she will stay that way.....
