or at least an explanation that makes sense to us........

Kelsey had her OT evaluation on Monday. Her physical therapist felt that maybe there were some sensory issues preventing her from moving around. Well, she was right. The OT told us that Kelsey has some motor planning and body awareness issues. I didn't know what motor planning was until it was explained to us, but now it all makes sense. Basically, she is tentative to move because she doesn't know how to go about doing it, that's the motor planning part. The body awareness part is that she doesn't really understand that her legs are hers and in her control. The OT explained to us the reason why she is flapping her arms....she said it is basically a way she is getting energy out since she doesn't move. We also mentioned to her that when Kelsey is trying to fall asleep at night, she pounds her feet on the crib mattress (which we thought nothing of)...she said since Kelsey isn't rolling around or tossing and turning, pounding her feet on the mattress is like a calming thing for her. The therapist said that she is actually very impressed that Kelsey has found a way to self regulate (thats the word she used) her body to make up for her lack of movement. We also told her that Kelsey can't put the bottle in her mouth because she can't aim right into her mouth. Same thing with self-feeding....this is why she doesn't put food in her mouth herself (combination of motor planning and body awareness) We were told that is a body awareness thing too....she said that kids with body awareness issues have a hard time doing things like pointing to their own nose...they will probably poke their eye or something.......it was amazing how all the pieces of info came together to actually make sense. So, of course, she qualified for OT through early intervention. Now we will probably have therapy 4 days out of the week, but at least she is getting help. The PT told me that once these OT issues are better, her gross motor skills will improve very quickly.
Kelsey decided to show off to the OT and started stacking blocks.....seriously?? She has never done that before ever....she ended up getting a 106 on her fine motor skills (85-110) is average....so no concerns there.
So, we were told that until therapy starts for OT to massage her legs and arms which is supposed to remind her that they are there. LOL. This girl has the life...queen of the household and now she gets massages.
Now, motor planning and body awareness issues can also be symptoms of bigger problems, but for now we are not thinking about that and are just hopeful that these two isses are isolated from a bigger problem. She is where she should be with speech and fine motor skills, so fingers are crossed.
She did wake up with pink eye this morning....but being sick for the first time in 13 months is pretty good. I was a good mommy and took her to the dr. and get her the RX drops so hopefully her eye will stop watering and oozing out glops. She is still as cute as ever, even with pink Eye

That's awesome they were able to identify what is going on. My oldest dd didn't walk until 20mths and they kept telling me she was normal because her fine motor skills were great. I could have saved so much time they would have just identified why, way back then. She is really smart now but still has gross motor skill problems.
