I saw this yesterday and had to wait to reply because..........
I would FLIP MY **** if someone hit my 14 month old daughter. There is NO excuse to spank or hit or anything else a child that age.
They DO NOT understand what is happening or why and it does NOTHING but teach them fear.
I think smoke came out of my ears when I saw this yesterday and it still makes me mad now.
I'm on the same page as Caroline, spankings are a last resort after every.single.other discipline attempt has failed. And not until they are much older.
As far as someone else spanking my child, I do NOT tolerate it. My stepdad (who was severely abusive to me as a child) once spanked AJ so hard my mom and I heard it. They were outside and we were in the house 2 rooms away and we HEARD him hit my son. AJ was 3 at the time.
There are no words for that kind of angry. I could have killed him in that moment without so much as a second thought.
He has never hit my son again and there's no doubt in my mind he never will either.
I'm with Mandy on this one. I DARE someone to hurt one of my kids. Adults should just know better.
And as far as what your inlaws saw about it Mandy, I got spanked and beat for EVERYTHING as a kid and you know what? It made me sneaky, and a liar, and completely mistrusting of my parents.
That's not the kind of relationship I want to have with my kids.
I just cannot get over someone thinking it's acceptable to spank a 1 year old child. Frankly, if they get into something they shouldn't at this age it's the adults fault anyway, not the childs. I think your MIL should get a freaking spanking. UGH.
PS- GO JOE for standing up for your family!!! He should get a gold star and some cookies and maybe a few other things () for being so awesome in that situation!
