Anyone have experience with recurring ear infections? We are being referred to an ENT specialist.

Since September Jon has had back-to-back ear infections. This last time he was off of antibiotics for a week and then bam another one. Last Friday he finished antibiotics so on Wed. I took him to the pedi for a recheck and both ears were clear, no fluid. The pedi did mention that he was also getting 4 molars, 2 of which were about to break through. Wed. night he started a fever. By Thursday fever was 102 and he was cranky. Fever continued off and on Friday but I wasn't sure if it was teeth or not. Saturday I took him back to the pedi. and the right ear is now infected! They gave him a shot of Rocephin and has to have two more shots this week. Then we go to the ENT. I'm wondering if we are destined for ear tubes? Are there any other options? I've never had a problem with either of my girls having ear infections like this. On a side note, he is breastfed...so much for that helping to prevent infections!!

This last one (now) has been a doozie. He is really fussy, not playing, not eating solids at all. I just want him to feel better!

I know someone on another board who exclusively breastfed and her kid got one ear infection after another... over and over and over. He ended up getting tubes. My kids were (for the most part FF), and no ear infections (Veronika had a tiny tiny one when she was around 2 years; she's 4.5 now). My other 2 never had any. I think some kids are just more prone to them then others *shrug*

I'd definitely take him to a specialist and go from there. It really sucks when our little ones are sick.

Duncan has tubes. I was so worried about him getting them, and even a little surprized at how quickly they suggested them, but once he got them he was like a whole new child. He did not have a problem with lots of ear infections, but he had a problem with fluid in his ear. Once the infection would clear up the fluid would not. As little as 3 months of fluid in the ear can damage hearing so it was not something I wanted to mess with.

Thanks for all the responses!

We went today for the second shot of Rocephin and have the final one on Wed. I will also get the referral then for the ENT. I think the only thing I worry about is putting him under anesthesia...but it is such a common procedure. Anyways, I'm anxious to get him cleared and proceed with the next step. He is feeling much better today, but he did break out in a rash that the dr. said was from the fever over the weekend.

I tell ya, with three kids, it is never boring!!

I just wanted to say I currently have fluid in my ears from catching a cold? From Brea who too was only bf until just last week. She too seems to be sick all the time I just don't get it. But shes a lot better then my son who seems to always have a "cold" I want to switch his doctor actually because of it, I think something else is going on. There should be no reason every other week he has it. :/

Actually yes we were in this same boat for months. Lina had over 10 ear infections. I honestly lost count because she had so many.
She actually ended up having to get tubes put in her ears at 8 months old. Since then not one ear infection and we actually have a happy baby unless she is tired or hungry.
I was really scared for the surgery but she ended up doing just fine. Aside from crying after surgery for 2 hours, once she got in the car and went to sleep she woke up happy and normal.
Oh and I wanted to add that I ebf Lina till she was 8 months old, so bf did not help us one bit. At about 7 1/2 months lina started refusing to breastfeed probably due to me being pregnant and I couldn't pump enough milk out so we went through our freezer supply and then moved her to formula.

Lydia too has had ear infections since August. We would get the infection cleared up but she would always have residual fluid. Within a week or so later, she would wake up in the middle night very fussy and/or with high fever and bam back at the docs. we just went to the ENT and on Dec 14 she is getting tubes and her adenoids removed. I know its a VERY common precedure, but I am still worried. Just have to have faith it will go well. Good luck and I hope your LO feels better soon!

Poor guy! I know the feeling. I hate the thought of anesthesia but after seeing them Constatnly feel bad I was READY to see the ENT. I know I was miserable from the lack of sleep, so I know she was feeling 100xs worse. Thanks for the well wishes! Hope you guys find a soulution that will work best for you both!
