My Dr put me on Alesse! She said once the milk supply is well established, nursing is going well and baby is gaining weight, there is no need for the mini pill and a regular BC pill is fine.

Has anyone ever heard of that!?

No, I heard the mini pill was best for nursing because it didn't mess up your supply. At least that's what my OB said and that's what she put me on when I was nursing. Then she told me to make sure to switch to a regular pill when I was done nursing.

No, there are many types of birth control that a nursing mother shouldn't have because it can mess with your hormones which will impact your milk supply. I was going to look up what type of birth control that is, but KellyMom already mentioned it on the page I looked up: http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastf.../birthcontrol/

It says it's a combination birth control and should be avoided until at least 6 months old when baby is established on solids. I would go back and insist on getting the mini pill, your doctor obviously doesn't know much about how birth control can impact breastfeeding!
