Do you have plans for the Memorial Day weekend, or Memorial Day?

My family usually does a cookout on Memorial day. I really miss being home at this time of the year. My hometown in West Virginia was the home to both of the National Cemeteries that are in the state. Memorial Day is a nearly week long celebration there. It kicks off on Friday with a pool party. There are concerts, vendors line main street, talent shows, town meals, and the finale is the parade, which lasts two hours or more! After the parade the community organized events are over, but there are block parties and cookouts all over town followed by boating and swimming at the lake. If you ever want to travel and see a really fun, small town celebration, you should check it out!

We don't really have any traditions, and this year we'll just chill out. The most moving Memorial Day I've had, however, was at the American cemetery in Normandy. It touched the soul.

See, while I didn't go into it (I didn't want to ramble) a huge part of the parade is that every school child in the county marches in the parade, carrying a flag and a bouquet. The parade ends at the older of the two National Cemeteries. The kids place a flag and flowers on every single grave in the cemetery and then they have a service at each cemetery honoring the fallen soldiers.

That has always been a very important part of the celebrations to me, but it became even more important five and a half years ago, when my father, a navy veteran, passed away and was buried in the national cemetery. Listening the 21 gun salute, and to the taps play, echoing out across the cemetery and realizing that every one of the thousands of men and women buried here have all served our country at one point or another...... and then when the honor the 800 or so unknown soldiers buried in the cemetery (from the civil war)..... it's just very emotional.
