I would have been way way better off if I had done unassisted all along. However, all that "assistance" led me to "needing" assistance now. My first was induced early, because the doctor was going on vacation. That was almost 18 yrs ago and I did not know better. The information we have now was just not out there. He got stuck, sustained brain damage, emergency c-sect. I went on and had a vbac next. Technically, I had a doctor, but he did nothing. Which is good. He monitored me I guess, which is good. But he kept his hands off. Then..,my next, we had moved. I had a horrible OB. My baby died from her mistakes(very short version, put something in the IV that did not belong there and resulted in him dying). Then the next...the OB was an @ss who lied while I was in labor to get me to consent to a c-sect. He claimed I had previa because I came in after 3pm and he had plans for the evening and did not want to be stuck at the hospital.
Getting the idea?
In some countries, you can have midwives and even home births and only go to the doctor if there is a need. Here, doctors mess around way too much and we have the lowest quality maternal care in the world (of developed countries). We have way too high of an infant death rate and so on. Even our maternal death rate is way too high.
