My husband is bugging me to death to eat out at a mexican restaurant but I think I recall that I shouldn't be eating mexican cheeses, is that right? I know it has something to do with listeria but I think I remember reading that it usually happens in non-pasterized cheeses but do restaurants even serve non-pasterized? I would think not. Do do you still eat mexican food during pregnancy? I just know I've read to avoid softer cheeses and eat harder cheeses but mexican actually is one of the few things that sounds appealing to me!

I had Mexican food 3 times this week! Lol! I ate it all during my last pregnancy too. Soft cheese I think try refer to is the Gouda and stuff. U can still eat cheese. U can even get dishes with out cheese if u feel more comfortable and just get salsa instead.

My first pregnancy I worked in a Mexican food place. I used to say the same thing about him coming out Mexican cause i ate so much of it. I have never heard anything against it though, as the other ladies said. At my old job though we used pasteurized cheese. Maybe you can ask before you order? Someone should be able to tell you.

From: The Dangers of Raw Milk: Unpasteurized Milk Can Pose a Serious Health Risk

On the no list:
Mexican-style soft cheeses such as Queso Fresco, Panela, Asadero, and Queso Blanco made from unpasteurized milk.

So if you want cheese, ask what kind it is. If they are pasturized varieties, you are good to go. My guess would be that most restaurants use other kids of pasturized cheese, but just ask. And enjoy!

Yeah here are a couple sites that mention mexican cheeses

Pregnancy Eating: What's Safe, What's Not

There is quite a bit of info on soft mexican cheeses in pregnancy but I am thinking that a place wouldn't be allowed to serve non-pasteurized cheeses in the US? I would hope not! The white cheese they serve is what makes the food so good! It wouldn't be the same without it and I don't care for salsa. Does anyone know what that white mexican cheese is called? I keep seeing things saying to stay away from queso blanco and queso fresco, which are more likely to be unpasteurized than a harder cheese like cheddar.

I seen this on one of my links: "Even if it's unpasteurized, if the cheese is heated until it's melted or bubbly, then it's safe," says Redfern.

Mexican cheese they serve at restaurants is usually pretty piping hot, so I would think its ok?

oh man I think I need to get some Mexican now. Yumm!!

I also think it will depend on where you are getting it from. Don Pablos and places like that you should be fine. Now if it is off of a trailer somewhere then I would probably pass.

I would die if I couldn't eat mexican right now. I'm pretty sure restaurants are required by the health department to use pasteurized cheeses.

If it's heated up you'll be fine. Listeria can be found in hot dogs, deli meats, things like that too, which many places say is a no-no in pregnancy. But if you heat it up first it's fine.

Where I live a lot of places use raw cheese (goat and sheep milk more so than cow's), but they are almost always warmed up in dishes and pizza. I still eat raw cheese, but have it warmed up to a degree where it kills bad bacteria. We're Italian, so cheese is not really something you can get away from here

We ate at the mexican restaurant and it was soooo good! I could only eat half though, I feel hungry but when I start eating I start to feel sick, cheese was super hot so I didn't worry about it, plus we went to a bigger chain mexican place.

Went to the besties tonight to watch the fights. She made her famous beans with jalapenos. I picked out the jalapenos but obviously the oil is still in there. DH warned me...I should have listened! Heartburn sucks right now!

The chances of you getting listeria while pregnant is literally slim to none. I eat whatever I want, except for sushi but I don't really eat that anyway. All this worrying about certain foods just causes more stress than it's worth. Eat what you want. 99% of the time you'll be fine. Especially those moms with morning sickness, if it's the only thing that appeals to you eat it. Cravings are your body's way of telling you it needs something. If people are *that* worried about listeria just pay attention to the news because if there is a listeria outbreak it's televised like mad and everyone knows about it, and what not to eat because it may be infected.

I crave Mexican food like crazy while prego! Pretty sure DH is sick of it by now, since we've had it nearly every other day since I found out...

Just wanted to share a tidbit. I do stay away from deli meat and hot dogs while prego, but I don't really eat them normally so it's no biggie. But most other things are fair game. My dad live in the Philippines and his wife just had a baby a few months ago. While prego she ate EVERYTHING...balut, dinuguan, you name it she ate it. Baby Lizette is completely healthy. So I think there's a lot of "hype" over here about pregos staying away from a lot and I think it's all just scare tactics
