I will say, I am very concerned about depression after I have these babies, I got the baby blues big time with my son but not actual post partum depression, he NEVER slept, he had horrible acid reflux, he spit up everything he ate and was miserable, he slept in 30 min spurts at a time, it was just awful, I was incredibly sleep deprived and this was with 1 baby, I am having 2 this time, so I am very concerned about the lack of sleep and depression. Did anyone go on an antidepressant after baby was born or do something else to help with depression? I am worried because I plan to nurse as much as possible and want nothing passed to my babies, from what I've read online, antidepressants can be passed through the milk, some more than others and some so little it can't be detected in baby, but that still doesn't sit well with me.

Most important advice is get help as soon as you feel going down hill, with Rhianna i waited until she was 6 months before getting help cause i was too scared, it was to late by that point because i already had no bond with her and i didn't feel attached to her, i wish i went on anti depressants earlier with her. I got pregnant with Lacey when Rhianna was 11/12 weeks old and so i was pregnant when i got put on anti depressants it was called Citalopram (Celexa) and it was safe to take during pregnancy, i was on 20mg and i was warned that Lacey may have withdrawel symptoms like the jitters etc.. Lacey had no problems when she was born she was 100% fine I have extra "eyes" on me this time during pregnancy to make sure i am not going down hill and if i do they will put me back on anti depressants, dont be afraid to speak out if you feel low

Yeah that was the one antidepressants I looked into because my sis in law was on it while nursing but I looked it up on safefetus.com and it seems to say otherwise

SafeFetus Drug Search

Its saying it can harm baby and be passed through breast milk and cause lack of weight gain in baby and feeding problems, I am so worried nothing is completely safe ...and while some babies may be fine from it, some may not be so lucky so I don't know what to do.

I hate asking for help, unless its close family, I know my friends have their own kids and lives and I hate asking for help.

I hope you don't have to deal with the baby blues or PPD this time around. I think it is important that if you do you take care of yourself so you can take care of those babies. There were at least a couple of girls in my PR that were breastfeeding and taking antidepressants so it is possible. As for asking for help, I'm sure a lot of people will will volunteer since you are having twins. Have you looked into joining any moms of multiples groups? I know some ladies in my other PR that have twins are in groups and they are always helping out new moms of multiples.

I am in a mom's group but not a mom's of multiple group, couldn't seem to find any. I've been on bedrest due to a SCH and a couple of them brought me meals, but most of them have several kids of their own, I'll need help with getting sleep more than anything, I plan to make and freeze 2 weeks worth of meals before they are born, but the sleep is what made me depressed.

i know its such a hard decision to make but your babies will be happy if mummy is happy and healthy, i wanted to breastfeed lacey but couldn't because they wouldn't allow me on the anti depressants (although was safe to take in pregnancy, they wasn't sure if safe to breastfeed on them) so i had to make the decision to formula feed instead so i could continue with my anti-depressants, I was happy and healthy and most of all Lacey & Rhianna were happy and healthy to, had i stopped my anti depressants to breastfeed i don't think i would of coped with the depression at all.

First off (((HUGS)). I really hope that you dont get baby blue this time around and the twins are a little easier on you. Always feel free to talk to us and let us know if your feeling down or feeling off. Also, you can always talk to your dr. about how your feeling if your uncomfortable talking to friends. I hope and pray this time will be different and you will be able to enjoy not only the twins but your son

{{HUGS}} I'm so sorry you had to go through that! It is SUCH a rotten ordeal!
I actually just had this conversation with my OB a few days ago. She insisted low dose zoloft was safe for breastfeeding and we could start it in the hospital before I go home. She said she'd rather see me nurse on zoloft than switch to formula after a few months (which was my previous plan). I had PPD after DD which actually manifested as horrible anxiety which was NOT fun at all--panic attacks, insomnia, the whole nine yards. Yeah--NOT doing that again! LOL
Another option that I discussed with my primary care doc a few weeks ago was natural progesterone. She said studies have shown it works wonderful for PPD and is all natural. Some doctors actually say PPD may be caused by the sudden drop in progesterone after delivery so it makes sense. You can get in as a cream from a vitamin/healthfood store or in pill form from your doctor. I may try that first and go the zoloft route if it doesn't seem to be working for me. Haven't decided yet...
As I'm kind of in the same boat let us know if you come up with some good info as I'm still trying to decide myself!
Good luck to you!

Thanks ladies, I did read low dose zoloft is the # 1 recommended in pregnant or nursing mom's, it seems to be passed the least through the breast milk, but I am still concerned, I think I will discuss it more with my midwife and see what she thinks, I just don't want to get where I was before and not enjoy my babies, I've wanted them for so long.

I only had mild baby blues after both mine were born. Passed after the first few weeks. I do want to offer you hope however that these babies might be better sleepers. My second I was expecting to be like my first and he was sleeping longer stretches right off the bat. You never know though I know with two its an even scarier thought.
