Ladies, I have a SERIOUS warning for you. Do NOT consume ANYTHING containing black licorice (licorice extract) while pregnant! It can cause severe bleeding or miscarriage. DH was just eating some (I had bought them two weeks ago) and I asked for some then on a WHIM looked it up and found out that it is VERY dangerous during pregnancy.

I ate like 10 pieces the NIGHT before (and maybe the day of too) I was admitted to the ER for bleeding.I ate organic licorice (VERY high in licorice extract now that I looked). I looooove black licorice, always have. I may have CAUSED my own bleeding! I could have lost my baby! Now, of course, I'm not 100% sure that's what it was but....surely not a risk worth taking again!!

Glad I can't stand the stuff. I love the red licorice though....is that safe? I ate a ton of Red Vines around week 9. LOL. No bleeding tho.

Thanks for sharing it's a good thing I hate black liquorish I only like the red. Sounds like that is what caused your bleeding time frame wise or what a weird coincidence.

It does something to the blood platelets that basically causes you to hemorrhage during pregnancy and is very dangerous to children 2 and under as well.

I feel terrible that a craving could have caused my bleeding. And in something so unsuspecting! It has GREAT health benefits when eaten/used outside of pregnancy though...

Holy crap! I don't like black licorice but it's a good thing to know! Wow.. how has this not become a more widely known issue? Cripes, they make us flip out over deli meats when the odds of coming into contact with listeria are pretty low.. but they don't tell us this?! Insane.. Thanks for the heads up!!

OMG I had no idea! I nearly bought some organic stuff yesterday from a local deli! But decided against it because it was so overpriced. Definitely will be steering clear of it.

I guess it's a good thing I HATE the stuff, so I won't have to worry about this. Interesting to know though.

So I take it licorice root in tea would be bad too?? My dh just bought me Organic Ginger tea, but it has chamomile and licorice root. I hadn't made it because I wanted to investigate the herbs first. Wow! Thanks for keeping us up to date.
