We use prefolds with a cover or pockets. Both are fairly cheap. You can get cheap pockets for $4-$5 each on eBay. Prefolds are roughly $30 for a dozen and then you need a couple covers to rotate which will run around $12 each. I prefer prefolds but DH prefers pockets because they are similar to disposables and easy to snap or Velcro on.
I use mostly pocket diapers, BumGenius, and some Flip & Thirsties covers. I got several off of craigslist and some from a garage sale (that was advertised on craigslist saying they'd have cloth diapers). It was very inexpensive to get started this way. There are so many different brands and types, so I didn't want to pay full price when I wasn't sure what I would like. I've made them all work for me, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend one type over another, but definitely buy them used if you can. You'll save tons of money that way.
I use a variety of diapers. I have pockets from previous kids that I haven't used this time yet but I will. I'm using prefolds and thirsties covers mostly. I love them. I never used them with my other kids and I wasn't sure if I would like them but I do. I also use fitteds with thirsties covers and I like those too. Prefolds are pretty cheap and easy to use
I do the sumo fold. I don't even use a snappi most of the time - I just wrap a cover over it. Sometimes I use the sumo prefold with an EC belt and no cover. I used the jelly roll fold when L was smaller.
