Hello ladies!
My name is Jen. I have a question that I hope someone here can give me some insight on. It isn't parenting related but as I live in a small town with no diversity to speak of I don't know who else to ask. I have been studying middle eastern dance for 8 years and trying to decide on a stage name. I have been in love with the name Mekkah for years but hesitate to use it because it is so close to Mecca or Makkah and I desperately do not want to offend someone. Is it ok to use that name? Or is it off limits? It is such a beautiful word, so old and earthy. I would love to use it, but if it is offensive I will definatley think of something else!
thanks for your time!
jen

I'm not middle eastern, but personally I would suggest choosing a different name. I feel weird when people refer to other things being a "mecca" for something other than Mecca, especially if it's something that's not really compatible with Islam (as in, "This city is a mecca for microbreweries"). As far as I can tell, "Mekkah" would be pronounced the same way and would pretty much be the same in anyone's mind (there are numerous English spellings). Maybe you could use something similar but with a different vowel sound, like Meekah or Mikah?

Its not. I know a few Meccas and Madinas. I wouldnt neccessarily name myself after a city though.
