How long did you wait before bringing your previous babies out on short trips? I don't have anything planned, but after being on bedrest I'm itching to get back out and do something, anything. My doc cleared me to drive and do whatever I feel up to, but I didn't get to see the pediatrician again before we left to ask her.

I didn't bring baby anywhere for at least the first 6-8 weeks, but that was mostly due to me recovering from my C-section. It was also wintertime and really cold, not ideal for a newborn. This time around, I would be comfortable after the first 2 weeks or so, as long as I get my VBAC.

My first trip out of the house was when Gabriel was one week old and it was for his first Doctor's appointment. We went to the Pediatrician, then to Moe's to eat lunch and to Target to pick a few things up. I had a C-section tho and I remember as we were walking into Target I told my DH just to run to get what we needed bc I was done! I had a very difficult recovery so I had pushed myself far enough for my first venture out.
My biggest thing was to keep baby fully covered those first few weeks/months when we'd go out to avoid germs and people touching my new baby.

Our ped is an hour away and he always wants to see the baby a few days after delivery. We take them there and then usually to the grocery store. When I had ds3, we went to the store and walked around for about half an hour and it was way too much for me. I felt fine so I didn't think nothing about it until all of a sudden weakness and dizziness hit. I could barely make it to the front of the store to checkout. Be careful how much you do. No matter how good you are feeling, internally, you are still very much still healing.

With my last DD we had to run to the store before going home after being discharged from the hospital. The more kids you have the harder it is to keep them home for very long. On average though usually about a week or two at the most.

I'm curious about the answers as well. My SIL is having a graduation party on June 1st, my dd is May 11th. I told DH that I didn't know if I would be comfortable taking baby to a party that soon where lots of people will want to play pass the baby and he thought I was crazy! Maybe I'm just being paranoid but it seems like a lot of a newborn who might only be 2 weeks old.

We waited 6 weeks before we took our son out to his first restaurant. All we did before then was walks or trips to the pediatrician. Of course, it was freezing cold winter. This time around I'm thinking 4 weeks. I'm just going to play it by ear.

You're not being paranoid. You just want to protect your baby from unnecessary germs!

I think I'll wait several weeks before we venture out, and then I know I'll be a bit paranoid about germs at first. I want to give Kody's gut time to get colonized by the good bacteria from my breastmilk, and time for his little immune system to get ramped up. I have no idea what the actual "safe" time is, but I think it's more based on Mom's intuition than any specific date. Doesn't hurt to play it safe though---all the germs we have at home will be germs that Baby will get inoculated for with our breastmilk, so the outside germs are the ones to worry about.

We have a friends wedding that is the week after my due date. Depending on when I deliver and how I feel at the time that is the first public outing im considering this time. However if we do go I plan to wear baby the entire time we are there so people are less apt to even attempt touching baby. We both have zero problem telling people to back off when they try to touch our brand new LOs or get in their faces.

I think my first trip with my first daughter was to the midwife for her 1 week check up, but I can't remember 100%.

With my second, I know for sure I went to Walmart with her when she was 6 days old, because someone asked me how old she was. Not sure if I went out with her before that, probably not since she was born in February and it was COLD.

We kept him in for about 6 weeks. He was born in October, and we went somewhere for thanksgiving.

Good information, I always wonder this too. My mom said she had me out a couple of days after I was born, but I don't know I'd be that comfortable. I guess we'll just have to see.

I don't think there is really a "rule". It's just whatever you are comfortable doing. For me, I like to stay at home for awhile.

I had him on Monday, we were discharged Wednesday, and we had a doctor appointment Friday, so he was 4 days old. We went to Babies R Us, Target, Subway and the doctor's office. I think after that, we didn't go out for a week or so 'cause I was so swollen.

We took our daughter out almost right away, but we lived across the street from the beach, so the fresh air seemed harmless. After a week or so, I pretty much took her everywhere.

The only outing we will be doing for a few weeks is going to get newborn pictures taken, but I am a FTM so I don't really have any advice, that is just our plan.

Both boys were 3 days. We had doctor appts (the hospital pedi is not our pedi, given the distance, so we go in at 3 days for a baseline). With Liam we did the doc and target...we had two outfits that fit him and no wipes He was early and much smaller than anticipated. With Kieran it was the doc, lunch at chilis, and the pet store (we needed dog food and it was close to the docs office). I wore both the entire time and no one even noticed I had a newbie.

But I am one who doesn't sit still for long. I get restless.

We had to take her to the doctor several times in the first few weeks due to her being a preemie and being so small when she was discharged. I don't think we took her anywhere else until 6-8 weeks...but again because she was a preemie. If he's closer to term and bigger I probably won't wait quite that long, but I'll wait at least a month.
