Just wondering if anyone could offer any experience with this.

Yesterday morning lost my mucus plug (coloured with lots of blood) but no subsequent bleeding. Some contractions following it. Went to L & D and was hooked up for monitoring for a couple of hours. Baby's heart rate was "impressive" as the doctor said, and the FFN test was negative. Had a VERY invasive cervical check (think flashlights and wedge pillows under my butt!) and they determined that my cervix is under 2cm but i'm not dilated. Right now I've been told to be hyper vigilant with any symptoms of labour I feel I may be experiencing and to come in immediately if anything changes. Just told to relax as much as possible and going for a follow up ultrasound this afternoon for my low lying placenta and to check the cervix again. The doctor, who was really great, pretty much told me that just because everything is fine right this moment, it does't mean it will be tomorrow, or next week and to relax as much as possible etc.

Has anyone had anything like this happen? I'm not sure what to think at this point. I get the feeling that this could go on to be a full term delivery or alternatively I could go into pre-term labour (specifically with my shortening cervix) but that they can't tell me one way or another and will deal with it when something happens. I have another FFN test in two weeks.

I'm sorry, I have no experience since I'm a first timer. I've heard of women losing their mucous plugs very early and still going on to full term, but I've heard the opposite as well. I hope it all works out. Take it easy and rest like they said. Good luck!

Yes, with David at 31 weeks. My cervix dilated though to 3cm and stayed that way until 36/37 weeks depending on what you go by. My friend dilated to 4cm and stayed pregnant until 39 weeks with her 2nd. Rest Hun and lots of water. Thinking of you!

Your plug can regenerate, but it is wise to keep an eye on it to be sure. I lost mine at 32 weeks with my last pregnancy (blood tinged and everything) but didn't go into labor until 39w5d.

Thanks for the info. Good to hear. I did hear it can regenerate so i'm hoping. I think the biggest concern at this point was the shortening of the cervix so that will have to be monitored. Hopefully this wasn't a sign of something starting to happen and he stays put for many weeks to come. They kept reassuring me that if he's born soon he'll be fine but I really don't want to even think about that for now.

oh and just had my u/s for my low placenta and possible gallstones. Alek has been in the same transverse position for about 8 weeks now. I think he thinks my placenta is a VERY comfy pillow. His head is wedged against my left hip bone and his bum is in my ribs on the right side.

Yep, I had that happen in my first pregnancy. I lost my plug at 19 weeks, and then even dialated to 2-3cm! But I was put on some meds to help with the contractions and bedrest and I even made it another 5 1/2 weeks being that dialated! So just try to take it as easy as you can and there is a good chance you can make it to term or at least to where baby would be okay if he had to come, ya know?

That is so scary though! I am sorry you are going through it but it is very encouraging that your fFN test was negative. I have also heard of the plug regenerating so I think there is a lot of hope Hang in there mama!!

Advice Call your doc and ask about the latest research that progesterone after 20 weeks in people at risk for preterm due to cervix length is 90% effective at preventing early delivery. Please do not rely upon my interpretation (I am NOT a doc). However, I have heard of literature on this. In addition, I had preterm with a different pg that was stopped. I was told that if at my 20 week u/s my cervix length did not measure good they would start the progesterone. I got great news and did not need the progesterone. If you doc does not appear to know, ask to consult with a perinatologist.

Ditto to what Kim said... I am on the progesterone shots. I have been on them since 14 weeks because I am at high risk for preterm labor. They seem to help me!
