I've been a strict vegetarian (not vegan, though) for almost my whole life, and I plan on sticking with it for the pregnancy so long as there's no medical reason I have to eat meat. I know my nutrition very well and I've been reading up on my additional needs as a preggo. Just wondering if anyone else is vegetarian, vegan, or even pescatarian.
I'm a vegetarian too. A very newly vegetarian though. I became a vegetarian the first of the year and have not mastered proper nutrition. I don't think I'm getting enough protein. My hubby is urging me to at least put chicken back in my diet but I just don't know.
Steph, getting enough protein is actually not usually the issue. For some reason people always assume that protein will be hard to get as a vegetarian and ignore that most meat eaters get too much. If you eat legumes like beans and lentils, some nuts, eggs/dairy, meat substitutes, tempeh, tofu, etc you'll be fine. What you need to pay more attention to is iron (found in kale, spinach, fortified cereals, etc), B12 vitamins (fortified cereals and milks), and DHA omega 3s which you can get from algae-based vegetarian supplements (also you can get fortified milks with veggie DHA).
I reccommend a book called "Your Vegetarian Pregnancy." It breaks down all the nutrients for you and where to get them.
Ooh, another good tip is to eat or drink something with vitamin C when you're getting your iron. The vitamin C helps your body absorb more iron more efficiently. So if you're having something with iron and you have a glass of orange juice, some citrus fruit, etc you'll get more out of the iron.
