First time here can I ask... I am seeing a midwife and heard they don't give epidurals. But they do give pain meds. I wonder how this will be. i am very nervous and scared, I don't think i could do it without any pain meds.

What kind of midwife are you seeing? Where are you giving birth?

If it's a CNM (certified nurse midwife), they typically can do epidurals in a hospital. Well at least that is the case here in NC

The midwife themselves may not give them but hospitals do them. Typically unless you are doing an out of hospital birth they are available if you want one.

I imagine at the hospital they would call in the anesthesiologist to do the epidural. I don't think the midwife would dump you for doing one, it probably just means that she would not be the one to administer it... only anesthesiologists can give epidurals because they stick a tube into the space in your spine and it is obviously a delicate procedure.

My "plan" is an unmedicated vaginal birth. With DD I had to be induced and after 14 hours on pitocin I caved and got the epidural because I was hyperventilating and my contractions had no break between them for hours. I'm positive that I could have done it without the epi if I hadn't been induced but we shall see. If I hadn't had the epi my doctor told me I would have had to have a section. I went from 1.5 cm dilated to 10 in just two hours after getting the epi becuase my body was finally able to relax.

My plan is a natural med free vaginal birth at the hospital....I would absolutely love to have a home birth (totally jealous of navywifey!) But I have petit mal seizures that can get worse with stress and lack of sleep(i dont take meds for these as i was prescribed depakote which causes a ton of problems especially to a developing baby) but its wise to be in hospital in case i have a grand mal. But my aunt and cousin are OB RNs(love my nurses) and my cousin has vowed to help me labor as much at home as she and my aunt feel is safe for me. But for delivery it will be in a hospital.

I have no idea. Before finding out it is twins I planned a med free hospital birth but now my goal is to get them to stay in as long as possible and do any and everything to make sure they are healthy. I would still love to go med-free and avoid a c-section if possible.

NO PIT!!!! vaginal birth like the other two times, no meds this time...the last epi I got was done wrong and it failed...felt everything anyways...also I got a spinal headache that made me feel like I was going to die. I had to get a blood patch which was also painful....NEVER AGAIN.

Unless something happens to change our minds, we plan to have this baby at home, unassisted.

Id really like to try for a med free vaginal birth this time. I tried last time but was induced at 41 weeks, never made it out of the triage room so there was no way I could walk, move, or try anything for contractions and finally got an epidural at 9-10 cm.
