Hi Everyone,

10 weeks and excited and blessed although this was far far from the plans. At 36 I've been accustomed to a certain lifestyle and up till I missed my period I was Indulging in my daily wine.
I have had little to no morning sickness but I've seen the baby's heartbeat and he/she seems to be "on track". I am nervous person by nature and the amount of information out there for mature mother is enough to scare me and I am confused about what steps I should be taking as far as tests, screening for a first timer at 36. My doctor seems to think I should already know these things and isn't very informative.

Anyone have some info for a newbie.

Oh and Congrats to all you new mommies!

Hi, congratulations to you, too! Knowing you're a first-time mom, your doctor should be willing to take extra time to answer your questions. If your doctor is not the right one for you, I'd recommend changing if you can. Depending on where you live there might be local mommy groups, la leche league, childbirth education classes... those are folks I'd recommend contacting for recommendations on local doctors. If you're stuck with your doc, just keep asking questions until you are satisfied that you have all the information you need.

and If you need info, there are all sorts of books out there. You could hit up the local library. And you can also get daily emails from websites like babycenter.com and whattoexpect.com.

Welcome! I'm sorry your doc was not informative. I'd consider looking for another one that is willing to take the time to answer your questions if you are able.

I'm 36 and this was unplanned as well. I'm not too worried about being over 35. My doctor didn't really explain anything to me either as far as testinb. Just asked if I wanted any of it. If he were concerned, I know he would say more. I am probably only going to get the nt scan done, mostly because I just want another ultrasound

A big help for me was the book "What to expect when you are expecting." I also found just mommies here, when I was researching a cure for morning sickness way back when.

I find that these forums and being around other women in the same boat willing to talk about and discuss every gross uncertain thing during this journey was very beneficial for me.

Thanks everyone! Picked up a couple of books today and have my first screen this week and an appt with my dr on Monday. I'm going in with lots of questions and will decide whether I should make the switch.

Anyone hear of this blood test that's an alternative to an amino - crazy!

I'm starting to get excited!

I am also 35, will be 16 when I have the baby and first time mom! * the word still sound scary to me*
Totally unplanned pregnancy

Our OBYN recommended doing the NT scanning b/t 12 to 14 weeks for scanning for Down Syndrome and other genetic illness. I did mine 2 weeks ago at week 12 and when it came back with flying color numbers, he said I don't have to test anymore JUst go in for routine appts

So don't fret about it!

I recommend you doing the NT Scanning since is a simple blood test and a 45 minute ultrasound, and if your numbers came back good, then you won't have to worry about the amino or any of that - Unless otherwise recommended by your doctor of course

Thanks Drangonflyldy! Its good to know there is someone out there going through the same at the same time. Just saw my doc yesterday and having the NT in two weeks which will put me at 12.5 weeks. I think Im gonna see how the first scan goes and take it from there. Glad yours went well and congrats to you!
