I am having such a hard time with middle names if its a girl. Anyone else having middle name issues? Another issue we are having is that our 3rd child has 2 middle names. Only because my wonderful uncle passed right before he was born and we were attached to the middle name he was going to have before that. And I am torn if I want to do it again or not. Decisions decisions!

FWIW, one of our boys has two middle names, all the other children have one middle name. Choosing a name is such an important privilege, we've often gotten stuck and worried the baby would have no name at all. But then suddenly you'll come up with the right name and wonder why you never thought of it before.

If it's a girl, her middle name will be Grace after my grandmother, which I think will go well with whatever first name we choose. (We have no idea now.) If it's a boy, I have no idea what his first or middle name will be! I think we're waiting to really seriously discuss it until we know what it is. No reason to fight over names that we won't be using. Haha.

We do family names for middle names so that makes it a bit easier than first names for us. We are pretty sure we are using Ann for a girl after DF's grandma that passed away in July. If for some reason the first name we pick does not sound good with Ann, our other options are Joy, Margaret, Mae, or Elizabeth.

For a boy, I would love to use James after my grandpa. But, again, that all depends on how it sounds with the first name we pick. Our other options are Cain, Ryland, Robert, or Lee.

I choose middle names for the girls, and they are all prominent women in royal history. The current front runner for this child is Charlotte. DH and I grew up in Charlotte, NC which is named for Queen Charlotte (married to King George III of England and a patron of Bach and Mozart).

DD1's middle name is Josephine after Josephine Bonaparte (my favorite person in history). DD2's middle name is Georgiana after the Duchess of Devonshire in the 1780s. She was an ancestor of Princess Diana and known for her fashion and politics.

I'm a nerd

If it's a boy, he automatically gets the middle name Kenneth. It's a family tradition for DH that the first born son has that middle name and passes it down to his son.

I wish my sister would not have used my grandmother's middle name for her daughter. Payson Joy would have been perfect! Ugh! And my other grandmother is Patrica so that wouldnt flow. Its so difficult this time.

I also like to use family names for middle names, and luckily DH and I both have some of the same "family names" on both sides of our families! It makes it super easy for a boy! Connor's middle name, (James), is also DH's middle name, my Dad's name and my brother's mn. The next boy will most likely have the mn Thomas, which is DH's grandfather's name, my Dad's middle name, and other family members down the line!

Unfortunately, we don't have any good family names for a girl! Mainly because we have decided on the girl name, and none of the family names sound right with Peyton. So we may have to go with a random mn, we'll see!

I think middle names are totally reusable! Especially if they are after family! Our "family names for middle names" tradition started with my grandparents so, as you can imagine, some have been used more than once. My dad's mn is my grandma's maiden name (Cain). DD and my mn is my mom's first name (Kathleen). My youngest sister's mn is after my grandpa (James). One of my other sister's mn is after my great-grandma (Elizabeth). One of my cousins mn is after my grandma (Joy). All of these are names we are considering using. Also, maiden names are awesome to use (in my opinion). One of my brothers has my mom's maiden name for his mn (Ritchie).

Payson Joy is adorable...I say if it wouldn't start a family feud, use it!

Family tradition states that each child has an M middle name and my great great great grandmother named all of her kids after presidents so we use M names of presidents.

We have James Dean Monroe so far (JD) and we will be using Contessa Madison for a girl or Jackson McKinley for a boy.

History geeks run in my family. Seriously my great great grandfathers name was George Washington M and his brother was James Madison M. LOL So it was an easy decision for me. If I were to have 4 kids - I would use my maiden name as the middle name since that begins with M and that child would clearly just have to become president. Or I guess I could go with a first name rather than last and have a Millard. haha

I agree that I think you can use Joy even if she did! She's your grandmother too! My family has lots of the same names running through it... I'm using Grace for a middle name if we have a girl, because it was my grandmothers name (actually her middle name, but it was what she went by, her first name was Willie). My sister Marinda's middle name is Grace and I have a little sister named Grace Elizabeth (we call her Gracie Beth) and my oldest sister used Grace for her oldest girl's middle name. My grandfather's middle name (maybe great grandfather too, can't remember) was Marin and it is my Dad's middle name and my brother Brandon's middle name as well as where Marinda (my sister) came from. And then my mom's dad's name was Brooks and her middle name is Brooks, my middle name is Brooks and I have a brother who is named Brooks Alexander. (Which is also the middle name (Alexander) my oldest sister gave to both of her boys. Her other girl's middle name is Marie, which is my sister Amy's middle name.) So... You see, names are reusable, especially family names for a middle name! (Or in our case... Any name. Haha)

I used family names for the middle names for both my first 2 kid's names. Lawrence is actually my son, husband, father in law and his father's name. His middle name is Graham which is my dad and grandpa's name. Hope's middle name is Evelyn which is my dad's mom's middle name that she went by.

My names Carrie Christena are both of my dad's grandmas names and my cousin and I both have Christena as our middle name

Middle names. This kid is going to be nameless period! We have gone through a ton of first names and none have stuck.

I totally agree that family middle names - particularly after grandparents are re-usable. If my nephew and this one had both been girls, my brother and I would have both used Helen for the name. It was my grandmothers name.

Payson Joy is beautiful.

We always use family names for middle names. Emma & Maddie both have two middle names each and all four names are pulled from women in my & ex-H's families. Miles has my last name as his middle name. I wanted him to have two middle names since it's a tradition in my family but John shot that down. Total poophead!

This time around I feel a little bad because if we have a boy then his middle name is going to be Barrett which is John's middle name, so that fits the pattern. But if we have a girl we REALLY like Hazel Jane but unfortunately Jane has no major significance to my family. We just like the way it sounds. We do have a Jane in my dad's family that passed away two years ago but it's not like she was super important to me. But I still love Hazel Jane so I think we'll stick with it anyway. I guess by Baby #4 you just run out of important relatives?

Also, I completely agree that middle names are reusable in the family. I think every woman in my mom's family has either Lynn or Marie as their middle name. No joke.
