So, I have been an assistant manager at Wal-Mart for a little over 2 years. Long story short, I started at Wal-Mart when I was 16, worked about 8 years, working my way up, then left to work for my Dad's company. He passed away about a year later so I am glad I did that. I ended up coming back in 2008 and working my way up in 2 years to be an assistant manager. I can't help but be disappointed that if I had stayed I would have my own store and be rich by now

Anyhow, I thought I would be an assistant 2 years and get a promotion. Most take longer but, I bust my butt. Anyway, my store manager has not helped develop me at all and even though I have had one interview I have not been promoted (no thanks to my store manager sabatoging me but that's another story) Anyway, an assistant manager posistion became available at a new store near Miller Park (Brewers stadium) that we will be opening in April. The HR manager from that market contacted me about an interview telling me that going into a metro market and doing well would really speed the promotion along. So, I interviewed, and will be offered the job on Friday. My store manager is pissed because I am leaving him before inventory (oh well) but I think I am doing the right thing. It is a $12,000 raise for the metro market, we will spend the next few months working 7-5 (right now I work over 13 hour days 4 on 4 off) doing hiring before putting the store together, which I think would be better for me during pregnancy. I just wonder if I am being selfish leaving my store or settling taking a lateral position instead of trying to move forward (which I thought I would hold off on while pregnant also)

And please, no Wal-Mart is the devil comments. Despite what people who have not researched had heard, they pay more than a living wage, offer many benefits including sick and paid vacation. For example, I get 12 weeks paid leave. And the statistic that more Wal-Mart employees are on assistance than any other employer, I am willing to bet that Wal-Mart has way more employees than another employer as well. I would assume that Idaho has the most rotten potatoes of any state also Wal-Mat also made a committment this week to hire 100,000 vets this year (sorry for my mini rent I get worked up haha)

First I wanna say congratulations on your new job! And you shouldn't feel guilty at all! You are doing what you feel is right for your family! That's awesome! It sounds like your current store manager needs to realize maybe it was him/her that may need to change their ways in order to keep employees.

Second, you shouldn't have to rant about Wal-Mart. If people want to judge you for working at Wal-Mart...screw them. They shouldn't be judging and they will get their turn in judgement! I know how you feel where you feel like you want to justify where you work. I left working as a nurse to manage a restaurant. And I get these "you're stupid" look all the time. I needed to take a break. I do plan on going back once baby is born cuz I am ready but I truly enjoy doing what I'm doing. So screw people for judging.

And I LOVE Wal-Mart anyways!!

Congrats on the new job Dawn!! Love your pic by the way...you look great!
And man people need to shut it sometimes. My mom worked at Sams Club for years and was paid insanely well.
Steph... I get crap all the time for quitting my career as a Non Destructive Testing Xray Ray Tech in order to be a Stay at Home Mom. Get told Im stupid for it too(it was a 60 grand income loss). People need to not be rude and keep comments to themselves!

Thanks, the pic is really old though haha

I just get frustrated because people are always slamming the company because of things they have heard when they know no one who even works there. And yesterday there was a news story about Wal-Mart hiring vets and everyone still *****ed about them ugh

Hey whatever you do to put food on the table is NO ONES BUSINESS! Congrats on the new job I think it sounds like you will have more opportunities to move up at a brand new store without the old sabotaging manager in the way!

p.s you always need to look out for #1 even if it means putting your job at a temporary loss...if they were treating you the way you feel you should be treated or would have been promoted you probably wouldn't be leaving right? Don't feel bad Dawn.
