So as you know my son David is in kindergarten this year. They have been learning about odd and even numbers. He was explaining that an even number is a number that can be split into equal parts. So 4 is even because each person gets 2. But then he got a very confused look on his face, and I asked him what's the matter? Well something is just not adding up here mommy. I said okay what? Well 1 is an odd number, but if I have a candy bar and want to share we would each get half. So one can't be odd because we would both have equal parts 1/2. I was in shock that his mind came up wih that before I could explain that it doesn't break down into a whole number. He loves math and he was just so flustered about 1 being odd.

That's wonderful! You've got a thinker on your hands. That *is* a flawed way to explain the concept of odd/even.

So I explained it using people and that you can't have half a person. He said well I know that but what about the candy bar! I am in for a run for my money!
