Just in case anyone is not aware, insurance companies are now required to cover all or some of the cost of a breast pump under the Affordable Care Act. I called my insurance (BCBS) and was told they will cover 100% of the cost of a pump for me. Unfortunately they only cover one model (First Years), not the one I wanted, but hey - it's free! I just need a scrip from my doc and it'll be taken care of. I advise all you breastfeeding mommas who want a pump to ask your insurance companies what they cover. We might buy a nicer pump and just get the insurance one as a backup or one to keep at my work or something.

Thank you for posting this. I had a really good one that I leant out to several people (last person never returned it). I pumped 3-4 times a day at work. This is huge savings if the one they give is good enough.

I am pretty sure that if you are returning to work they will. Not sure if you are a SAHM. Perhaps you should check through them or WIC. I heard something about this.

I'm not sure if you are on WIC or if that program exsits where you live but when I had DD I got a free medela breast pump from my local WIC program. I would che ck it out. Most government agencies are very pro breast feeding as it cuts down on the cost if they were tp provide formula instead.

I have Aetna and I get a free one too but this is my 2nd baby but first time attempting breastfeeding so if it doesn't work I'll be happy to pass my unused pump to any of you ladies.

Yes, I just called the customer service number for my area and chose the benefits and claims option, then spoke to a real person and asked what I had to do to get it covered.

I am annoyed that it has to be that one type? I googled the one you said and it was like $70.00. I need to use this pump like 3-4 times a day when I go back to work and I need a very good one.

I want to go back to work but could never afford a decent breast pump, So I was going to stay home for a month or two and breast feed then have to switch to formula feeding.

Ill have to call on monday and see if they provide

You may want to check into purchasing a used pump. The companies sell new tubing that is really cheap. When I left others use our pump, I just had them purchase new tubing.

Do you have to wait for the baby to be born?
I plan to pump for puppet since she'll be in the hospital for a long time. It would be nice to have things set up before she comes.
I've used the first years pump. It's ok for occasional use but for returning to work or extended pumping, you really need an Avent or Medela.

I'm really happy they're doing this now but I'm also WAY pissed, lol.

When I had Alex in 2011 the only pump insurance would cover was a $30 manual one. Seriously? The only pump they would cover was a single pump manual...the LEAST efficient and most USELESS pump for a going back to work mom.

That being said, I probably will take advantage of this. I bought a Medela pump ($250) and loved it. I took really good care of the pump (very clean, no back up of fluids) though the bag took a beating. I was thinking of selling my old one for a few bucks.

I just hope that there aren't any caveats like "will only cover if mom returns to work at least part-time" because i plan on being SAHM.

I was told by the medical supply company that I just need a script from my doc, and that most people get one for "engorgement" and it's not questioned. Not sure if I need to wait until after the birth or not, but in cases where you and the baby are going to be medically separated they might write you one ahead of time.
