My husband is coming stateside April 17-27 for a ten day school...something about driving boats, and he'll be in Virginia. We mentioned meeting each other for a day at the halfway point, which is basically the Ohio Pennsylvania border. I'll be 33 weeks. My mom said she would drive with me for the 5 hour drive. I'm not high risk, or at any risk for preterm labor....do you think I'd be safe traveling that distance? I'm going to ask my doctor too. I hope it's ok, I miss him so much.
I think you'll be fine. I made the drive well into my 3rd trimester from Norfolk, VA to Western MD to visit my grandparents and it could be up to a 7 hour drive in bad traffic. I was fine. Just stop to walk around and make sure you plan for bathroom breaks and you should be fine. Too bad you can't stay with him in VA. I'm assuming Norfolk? It's nice there. Fun stuff to do and lots of good places to eat, if you know where to go. Really excited for you to get to see him, though! Have a safe trip and a great time!
When I talked to my doctor about going on a trip 5 hours away, and I would be almost 30 weeks, he told me that as long as you get out often and stretch your legs, it would be fine. He also said, just don't do anything you wouldn't do at home, and you would also be fine. He feels pregnant women shouldn't feel captive and live fully, just be careful, don't over do anything, stay hydrated, and don't go the whole 5 hours in the car without getting out to stretch. So you'll be fine, I'm sure. I would definitely go.
Me personally, I would travel =) My now DH and I were long distance at the time I was pregnant with DS and so around 31-33wks I flew to Maui to spend my 30th birthday with him. My OB was fine with it, I just made sure I was well hydrated, and got up to walk around on the plane occasionally. It was funny, I was as big as a house with DS and so everyone around me looked at me like I was going to deliver at any minute. I think I got the best service ever at the airports/on plane and strangers totally went out of there way to help me! It was awesome! For sure check with your doc though but I can't see driving worse than flying.
*A BIG thank you to Jaidynsmum for my super fantastic siggy!!*
My doc's rule is 32 weeks for plane travel 35 weeks for car. Anything over 30 weeks and longer than an hour ride requires at least a 10 minute stop for walking due to a higher risk for blood clots. Other than that - you should be good to go. You will most likely need to stop naturally for bathroom breaks anyway.
I usually make a last trip to Oklahoma to visit my family around 34-35 weeks with each pregnancy because I know it will be a little while after baby is born before we get back up there. It's a 6 hour drive. I just make sure to take a few breaks from riding (I usually need to go to the bathroom and my hips start hurting anyway). Have fun!!!
Good! I hope we can see each other. He still needs to find out details and specific dates but fingers crossed it happens. I just want him to see me pregnant and feel his son kicking, even of its only for a few hours.
