Is there anything that a ftm might not think to pack for baby and/or yourself?

Hmm... things you might not think of...

Things to clean yourself up after labor. (I am kind of OCD about feeling clean, though! :lol)

So I will have with me:
-Facial cleansing wipes
-Lotion
-Gum
-Brush
-Just the essential makeup--for me that's mascara, powder and chapstick

Then I like to bring my own toiletries. The hospital does have some, but I prefer my own.

-Body Wash
-Shampoo
-Face Wash
-Toothbrush
-Hair Ties to put my hair up
-Flip flops for the shower and walking around the hospital, ya never know what is growin' on those floors, lol.
-COMFY clothes for going home. Like yoga pants and a tank or a loose summer dress.

Then for baby, I plan on packing:
-A couple outfits
-A blanket
-A hat
-A burp cloth

The hospital will provide the diapers, wipes, pacifier (if you wish), formula (in my case) so I won't be packing any of that stuff.

Oooo.. just thought of this!

Also:
-Toiletries for Hubby
-Camera/Camcorder
-Money for the vending machine (For the hubs)
-Clothes for DH
-Phone Charger
-Laptop or Tablet so you can update us all on JM

Great question Amy! I'm going to go with Valerie's answer! I think I just may print off her list!

Even if you don't gain a lot of weight, your belly is still going to be fairly swollen, so leave the jeans/skinny outfits at home. The best going home outfit for you is a smaller size maternity pants/top (remember - you boobs will most likely be HUGE) Also, pack pants that will be comfortable if you end up with a c-section. Even though nobody goes into labor thinking "I may have an emergency c-section" the last thing you want is your DH going through your clothes at home trying to find something for you to wear.

Valeria has about the most perfect list, so not much to add. I would add a sleep mask if you have one. It is never really dark in your room and it can make it hard to sleep.

The biggest thing I recommend is some giant underpants. The post partum pads they give you are HUGE and, unless you want to wear paper disposable underpants from the hospital (I was not down), I suggest bringing your own in a size a good bit larger than you usually wear. I also packed my own thinner overnight pads for the second day. The huge ones are awful. Having my own underpants and pads made the time I had to be in the hospital a lot more comfortable.

warning. The hospital gives you (or at least the one I go to does) pads that have heating and cooling. They are like a heat pack pad and a cool pack pad. They are really long and you twist them to make them hot (or cold depending on the one given). They really help that area feel good and absorb the flow. The only problem is that they are heavy and the hospital gives you mesh underpants. When you use the pad, the undies hang to the ground. Therefore, a tight pair of yoga shorts or the like helps keep everything in place. I warned ya TMI - I loved having them though.

What great lists! This will all help immensely! When we went for our hospital tour, the nurse suggested we bring extra pillows, not just for DH to use, but she said their pillows aren't that soft, so to bring 2 or 3 of your own so you can be comfortable during Labor and Delivery and Postpartum. I never even thought about bringing my own pillows until she specifically mentioned it.

^I was going to recommend pillows as well. The hospital's were not comfortable at all, and I brought my big king size one to put behind my back during labor instead of 200 of their little ridiculous ones.

I've had in the past:
Robe
Slippers
Camera(s)
Clothes for me and baby
Toiletries
Chapstick!
Gum/snacks
Cash for vending machines
and on ... basically what has already been listed.

With my youngest we also had a gift for my oldest from the baby. He was only 3 at the time and loved it.

I haven't even thought about the hospital bag. With my second I went in labor before I packed one so when my water broke at 3am I was scurrying around trying to grab everything we'd need.

I agree with the comfy pants. I made a mistake and wore maternity jeans after my first. That was the worst thing ever for my stitched up and swollen bum. Super stretchy yoga pants the second time were much better.

I brought my own nursing pillow the second time too. I had a hard time positioning the first time, but it was much easier with a nursing pillow. We left it in the car until after the baby was born

One thing not listed that I recommend is a MP3 player. With at least a few hours of your fave music choice. FTMs can expect a long labor so think of music that is calming or soothing to you. As well songs you like to work out too. So you have a variety of music that soothes or pumps you up depending on which point of labor your in.

It seems like a lot when you list it out, but that sounds about right. My DH won't be staying so we won't have the stuff for him, and the baby's stuff is packed in the diaper bag as opposed to the hospital bag, so my list looks shorter, but basically I have the same.
