Baby puppies that is

We had an emergency c-section today on an English Bulldog. We delivered 6 viable puppies. After lots of suctioning, rubbing, and intensive care, all 6 puppies were finally crying and turning a beautiful pink color. . I truly love my job anyways but today I was feeling my mommy instincts kicking into overdrive as I literally brought my puppy back to life (in situations like this, we do just like with humans and each puppy gets their own neonatal care person to pink them up). My puppy started out gurgling and purple and was pink and crying within just a few short minutes of care.

Such an exciting day and I'm sure my mommy hormones are making me all the more sappy about it all lol.

Here is mama in recovery (I'm sure several of you csection mamas can relate to how she is feeling)

Aww so cute! So what happened that the puppy needed an emergency c/s? Our cat had a weird labor and a baby got stuck when I called our vet they helped me deliver the stuck baby over the phone. Just curious.

English Bulldogs are pretty much a man-made breed. They have a very hard time breeding on their own due to their hip shape and the fact that most female's hips can't support the weight of the male. This was actually a very unique situation where they were able to breed on their own, much to the owner's surprise.

Because of the shape of their hips/pelvis and because the puppies tend to have very large heads and shoulders, most English Bulldogs require csections because the puppies can't fit through the birth canal. We tried to let her labor on her own but she was stressing out and was making zero progress. It is very rare for this breed to deliver vaginally.

Because artificial insemination and csections are usually necessary for this breed to reproduce, their puppies are very expensive!!!

Cute! And that is interesting... I always wondered why the puppies were so expensive. I guess that explains it!

Awww too cute! I love the look of the English bulldog and always wanted one. Never could afford the 1500+ for a pup tho. Guess I will stick to my American Bulldog

That's really interesting! Thanks for sharing Hun. I had no idea about that.

So the owner brought in the dog in labor? Or was she already at the clinic?

Aww! Poor mama. She looks exhausted! It's super exciting that you got to help a lil pup! I'm more sentimental towards animals than people, so that story made me super happy and even a little teary. haha. Glad the mama and pups are doing well!

She brought her in already in labor. Typically, when a dog is starting to go into labor their temperature will drop down below 100 (normal for dogs and cats is 100-102). Her temp was 99 when the owner took it this morning so she brought her in to see us. She was already contracting and trying to push so we kept her for a few hours for observation. After a couple of hours, it was very apparent that she was not progressing and was stressing out so we knew what needed to be done.

She and the pups are recovering nicely, however, she doesn't like her puppies so far. She was in a bit of shock from the whole ordeal and is a first time mama so it's not uncommon. We are hoping she warms up to them but, just like with people, not all dogs are meant to be mothers and the owner is prepared to bottle feed all 6 puppies if need be.

Aww how adorable! Poor momma looks so tired. I say all the time I have way more compassion for animals than I do humans. Except for little kids. What an awesome experience.
