How can I tell the difference between thicker than normal discharge and mucus plug?

The mucus plug is a massive amount and pretty gory. However, you can lose "pieces" of it.

If you are feeling brave....you could always google search images of mucus plug and compare....

I was wondering this as well. Just from reading other random threads and birth stories, I've heard that it's pretty bloody and A LOT - like Sunny said. Before I read more about it, I had a very small amount of brown mucous discharge (SORRY tmi!) a few weeks ago and wondered, but haven't had any since and figured it was just a fluke since everything has been par for the course. I won't be looking up any images on google, though. I have a feeling seeing my own when it happens will be enough!

Mine wasn't bloody, but it was much more gelatinous than discharge. I was wearing pads at the time mine fell out with DD in case my water broke while I was working and it was just a gross blob that sat on the pad and it was big. I had no idea what to expect, but when I saw it, I knew. I'm sure you will, too.

mucous plug looks more like a glob of clear-ish /blood tinged jelly. gross, yes, but you'll more than likely know the difference when you see it. it can come out in little bits or one big glob, or both. but yeah if it resembles gel or jelly it's prob your plug

I just lost part of mine a week ago and had no idea what it was but honestly it looked like a big brown gelatinous booger , I had to call my doctor because I definitely did not know what it was and then I had to have a cervical exam to make sure I wasn't dialated, but ive been losing more pieces of it this week and they kind of remind me of piña colada flavored jello ... Never eating that again ...
