Okay, so DH and I have been flip flopping on this and I thought I would get some opinions.

We were supposed to be getting a hand-me-down crib from the in-laws...yeah, apparently that's not happening anymore.

We do have a pack and play that we're going to use with Arthur for a while in the nursery. We were planning on starting him off in that anyway, since we have to move and didn't want to move unnecessary furniture.

I pose this question to you guys: how necessary is a crib? Could DH and I just use the pack and play as his bed until he's ready to move to a regular bed? Right now that's the plan. But we keep going back and forth because in our heads, a baby needs a crib. But is that necessarily true?

The only thing I would worry about is the lack of support in a Pack N Play "mattress". I'm not sure if baby sleeping on that long-term would be good. I could be wrong, though.

I know a lot of people who use it long term but I wouldn't. I think the bassinet part is fine but the mattress is very thin and I just don't think it would be a good idea for use until baby was ready for a bed.

I agree. I do not think a pack n play is a good to use instead of a crib. DD had to sleep in a pack in play for two months age 9 to 11 months while we were moving and we stayed at my moms house and she would wake up every morning soooooo cranky and I figure its cuz she was sore. The pack n play mattress is only like an inch of material on top of a board.
And considering also that most kids can stay in their crib til up to 2 depending on the kid...it'd be hardly fair to make him sleep on the equivalent of sleeping on the floor. Buy a crib that's converts into a toddler bed and then you can use it for several years and you can use it when the next one comes as well.

Thanks! These were all worries I had too. So this morning I "window shopped" online and picked out a crib I like. Now I just need to wait until tomorrow after DH is home and rested to talk to him about getting it. He's been very pro-crib, so it'll be no big deal. It's just a matter of: do we buy it now and store it in it's box, or do we wait until we move and then buy it.

This is the one I like btw: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dream-on-M...resso/16819312

I like it because it's smaller, because we don't know what our living situation is going to be, and someone short like me reviewed it and said it's easier getting the baby in and out without jostling the baby than a regular sized crib

When will you be moving? If it's in just a few months, I'd wait until after you're settled. The bassinet part of a p'n'p goes up to 15 lbs, I believe. I know DD was a tiny baby and it took her several months to outgrow it, though we didn't use it after 3 months because she was starting to roll and squirm. We didn't use the crib at all until she was 10 weeks old because the only place she slept soundly was the swing.

We're moving in June, right around the time baby is supposed to make his appearance. Don't we just have the greatest timing?

definitely not in place of a crib
the bottom is just a piece of hard cardboard with fabric wrapped around it
plus at some point the kids going to end up too long for it and able to escape (plus its not as sturdy as a crib, might tip it over)

I would wait to get a crib until you move. Using a pack and play or bassinet temporarily won't hurt the baby.

IKEA's shipping is OUT OF CONTROL! I was looking at a dresser for the nursery. The Dresser was $200 something and shipping was seriously over $300. Crazy!

HOLY COW!!! Totally not going to do that then!! I'll stick with Walmart and do ship to store and get free shipping. GEEZ!! That's almost like Target...I think they wanted more for shipping the shelves we wanted for the nursery than the shelves actually cost! We ended up just driving and buying them in store.
