When I went to L&D today, I got sort of an unofficial tour of the maternity ward. As I was being wheeled through, I peeked at the different labeled rooms - labor room, birthing room, recovery. I was put in a labor room and there was barely enough room for the bed and a chair. The bathroom was TINY and it felt so closed in. My mom looked at me and said "I really think we should go to DuBois when it's time for the baby." The birthing rooms didn't look any bigger or well equipped and at that point I didn't care about the recovery room. We are skipping the tour that was scheduled for tonight because I just can't imagine trying to labor in that room, let alone give birth in a room that appears to be about the same size. So, as a final update to my where-should-I-give-birth dilemma...looks like it will be the hospital in my hometown about an hour away. I appreciate all of your advice and it definitely helped to make the decision easier. I feel really good about being in a familiar place and having more modern care. Another plus : the hospital has an amazing NICU, so that eases my mind as well. Yay for big decisions being made!
