My oldest sister (who has 4 kids) keeps telling me all the things that I need to get. Most of which I have or have thought about, some I'm glad she's mentioning, and others I don't think I'll need. But one of the things she keeps telling me I HAVE to get is a nipple shield for breastfeeding. Is that necessary? Do most people use one? Or no? Thoughts?

I have read that it is actually counterproductive to use them unless you have a specific reason.

Do not get them unless you experience issues breastfeeding. They can lessen your supply if you are not having any issues. They are also a pain and can be a bigger pain then help. Only get them if there are latch issues or inverted nipple issues.

I had to use them with my youngest since she had latch issues and thank goodness we were only on them for 2 weeks!

Ok thanks. That's what I thought. I know she had latch issues with her oldest & I remember that was why she started to use it. I honestly don't remember her using it with the others and i was around her feeding them a lot. But she was saying it was good for when your nipples were really sore/cracked and I just thought that it would be in the way and maybe cause latch issues. I'll just tell her I got one so she'll be quiet. Haha.

The lanolin cream is really good for cracked/sore nipples so I would get that before I bought the shields.

Ditto on the lanolin (it is a must have, especially in the early weeks) but I agree that the nipple shield isn't necessary unless you are having problems. But seriously, get lanolin and if you forget to bring it to the hospital, ask the hospital for some as soon as you can.

I don't have any lanolin yet, but it is on my list of things to get!
