Okay, so DH and I have pretty much decided we want to drive up to Iowa in July for his 10 year reunion and to show off Arthur to his family, since we really don't want to go to Disney World and be cooped up in a hotel with his crazy nephews. The drive to Iowa is 19 hours long...any advice on doing this with a one month old??? Other than expect it to take longer than 19 hours with all the stopping to feed?

Definitely expect it to take a long time. Be prepared for diaper changes in the car on the side of the road so have some bags you can close up to keep things contained just in case you don't have a trash can nearby. How does he do in the car? If he's happy in his carseat, it probably won't be too difficult. You may want to sit with him to keep him awake so you don't mix up days and nights once you're there. Car trips used to make Lily fall asleep.

Ditto, Courtney. We did our first road trip (NC to FL) when Connor was about 6 weeks. It would normally take us 7.5 hours and that first trip took 13 hours.....I almost swore off road trips after that. It really depends on the baby though, Connor did NOT like his car seat when he was a newborn, it took awhile for him to enjoy it (now the road trip take 8 hours! lol)

I did sit in the back most of the time, we did do the diaper changes on the sides of the road, and I also did the "nurse in the carseat" trick. It was a PITA sometimes, you just sort of lean over the car seat with your boob dangling in front of him lol best i can explain it!!! I know there are some out there who may say it's "allowed" to take your baby out of the car seat to nurse them in the backseat, but I, personally, would never, ever, ever, EVER do that. I'd much rather be uncomfortable leaning over the seat or just making those extra stops.

Change diaper and nurse EVERY TIME you stop for gas, food, etc. I'm sure those who pump/bottle feed have it MUCH easier on road trips! ha ha

The first thing I would suggest is take a soft pillow to sit on if you're any kind of uncomfortable in your lady parts still. We took a 7 hour road trip when DD was 2 weeks old to surprise my grandma for her bday (best surprise ever!) and I thought I would be fine bc the pain had mostly subsided. BIG mistake. After a couple of hours, my crotch was on fire. The rest of the trip was AWFUL! I borrowed a pillow to sit on for the trip home.

As Brianne said, do a diaper change and nurse every time you stop for any reason. Also, if you are pumping at all, it is easier to pump while you're in the car and then give the bottle with your baby in the car seat. I also sat in the back with DD for all of our road trips for many months. It made things MUCH easier. We did a lot of road trips when she was very small. It can be done, but it does take more time.

I made a lot of solo 6+ road trips with dd from the time she was about 2 weeks old. Lots of stopping. It's way easier with someone else.
We will be going from SC to MS when baby is 3 weeks and I'm absolutely dreading it even though I feel like a pro when it comes to long trips with an infant.
Good luck!
