Trey was born with extremely long and sharp nails. They especially hurt when nursing as he tends to dig in. Drs and hospital told me to wait until he's about a month old to trim his nails as they're still attached to his skin and to just file his nails. He screams blood murder when I try filing them and he's scratched up his face and my chest so I really want to trim his nails

I know it sounds gross but I have bit my kids nails bc clipping was too risky.

Did you try filing when he is sleeping after eating? That worked best for me.

Conrad is 2 1/2 weeks old and I've already trimmed his nails 3 times. They were SO LONG at birth and they grow insanely fast. I need to do them again in the next day or so. The hospital gave me a nail file but that didn't do much at all. The nails just bent over. I use a big toenail clipper for both my boys. I find it's much easier to control than those tiny ones for babies...and even regular sized fingernail ones. I am VERY careful and make sure to pull down the skin first. No problems so far. And my baby's face is thankful. Poor guy was scratching the crap out of himself!

I've started putting Arthur in little mittens. No matter what I do, it feels like he has claws, and he scratches his face like crazy when he's upset.

I've trimmed Morgan's a few times already. She was born with claws too. Filing them did absolutely nothing. I haven't trimmed them short, but I can at least trim down the sharp edges. If she is sleeping I don't have a problem. I haven't attempted it while she's awake.

I just trimmed Leif's the other day. I used clippers with a big handle so I would have better control. He handled it just fine. I waited til he was asleep though.

Maybe try different types of clippers, if you've been using baby clippers, try adult sized, or scissors even. Sometimes you'll be more comfortable using one over the other or it may be easier to use.

I filed the girls until I felt safe enough to clip them.
