Sorry to crash your due date club. I am hoping to talk to other moms of preemies and not many on my board since my board (august) isn't due yet. Only 2 of us have had our babies.

Tomorrow night will be the first night I get to try to breastfeed my preemie. She was born at 33weeks and is almost 3 weeks old now. I have been exclusively pumping all this time. She was getting fed through a tube (and still is most of the time) and for the last few days has been getting a couple bottle feeds a day.

Any tips to make our first breastfeeding experience a success???

(I have successfully breastfeed 3 kids already, an 2 were preemies also, but they were far enough along to nurse right away. Never had to wean from bottle to breast before.)

I've nursed 7 preemies. The most important thing is just being there to try. The more you nurse in the nicu, the easier it will be when you're home. They'll probably have you do bottles every other feeding at home but eventually you can move over to fully nursing, it just takes time. Also, as you probably already know, babies don't nurse on a schedule, despite what they think in the nicu. When you are home, just nurse whenever the baby wants during that 3 hr period, then do a bottle for the next 3hr period and pump. It's a lot of work, but you can do it. I miss nursing.

Thank you so much. Great advice <3 I breastfed her for the first time yesterday and it went okay. Definitely wasn't going to get her feed that way because she can't keep a latch and wasn't sucking/drinking more than a few sips, but hopefully she catches on.
