Maybe someone here knows more than me as I did not breastfeed my daughter for a super long time. My question is, does your nutrition i.e. what and how much you eat affect your milk supply? Like would it dry up if you aren't having a certain amount? Thanks girls
Hydration and getting enough calories is important. I don't eat wonderfully right now but your calorie intake is important for you and your baby, just like it was in pregnancy. Same goes for staying hydrated.
I agree. You need more calories to breastfeed than you do during your pregnancy. Things like oatmeal have been shown to increase milk supply if you eat it. When I'm nursing, I try to eat a big bowl of oatmeal for breakfast most days.
Getting enough good fats is important for your milk. Like omegas and fatty vegetables (avocado, olive oil) and even things like full fat dairy are great for your supply and milk quality. These things are high calorie and also nutritionally dense (i.e. not empty calories like white bread and sugar and soda). Also, calcium is very important esp for extended breastfeeding. Your body will literally steal it from your bones if it can't find it in your diet, in order to make calcium rich milk for your baby. In general as the other ladies said, plenty of calories and stay well hydrated, but also think "good fats and calcium"
The important factor on calories is to be above of Base metabolic rate. You can lose weight while breastfeeding. I have avg .5 a pound loss a day the last 2weeks and my supply is adequate for Bodhi. Hydration is very important.
I try to make sure my calories are quality calories.
