just got back from our 5th hearing test at the Audiologist. It appears that Jackson is deaf in one ear. The other ear is fine. I am supper bummed out. We go back in a few months to a specialist but there really probably won't be any change.

Huge hugs Hun. I'm not sure how accurate a newborn hearing test is, but even if its accurate he will have an amazing life.

Big hugs. I haven't deal with this in a newborn or had total loss in one ear. He is still going to be amazing and have a wonderful life.

I have partial loss in my left ear from repeated ruptured ear drum and scarring (I get bad ear infections). The only time I really notice is when there is a lot of background noise and someone is talking in that ear or I have earbud head phones in.

I'm sorry! But like the others have said, he will still do great despite the loss. Have they mentioned any possible treatments or will the specialist go over those? My DH was deaf in one ear from ear infections but they rebuilt his ear drum

I was actually born with a defect to my left ear and lack an eardrum and even a canal. I've never known any different, so it doesn't bother me at all. I might say "What?" more than the average person, but whatever. And yeah, when people try to whisper in my left ear I have to tell them that I can't hear from that ear, or when people are on my left and talking to me, I usually have to look directly at them to hear well.

I know this has to be incredible hard. I wanted to add though that my Mom just got a cochlear implant a few months ago. She has nerve deafness. Heard at birth and slowly lost her hearing (down to 7%). The implant is amazing and supposedly children do even better. It is amazing now that she can hear. I am so used to translating for her - it is amazing when she tells me to stop because she just heard the person technology is amazing. I hope there is something to help you son.

That stinks. Hopefully they can do something for him either soon or in the future with all the treatments they have now.

He has had 5 newborn screening and further diagnosis. It's not looking good. They will have us go back in a few months to retest and see a ENT specialist but they don't think it will change. It broke my heart and I was so sad for my little guy.

Thanks for sharing your stories ladies as you said I hope it doesn't affect much. Maybe later in his life the can explore options. She told me today that there is no point for a hearing aid as the is nothing to amplify.

I just wanted to add, that I got a cochlear implant when I was 14. It's not exactly like a cochlear implant you see everyday, because I actually have a birth defect. I actually don't like wearing it because it can be very confusing to hear sounds from both sides, because I only ever heard from one ear. If you do decide to get him one, I would do it while he's younger so it becomes the norm for him.

I'm sorry to hear this. It's a good thing it was caught early. My nephew only hears out of 1 ear but it wasn't caught until later (he was a foster baby). Now that they know, they are looking into a cochlear implant. He just turned 3.
