Just after Tania made her post the other day I got my American Baby magazine in the mail and in it was this article. This is the second time I have seen a similar study about when to feed solids. Had to share. This is what statistic I tell nosy people who tell me when to start feeding my baby cereal. Yep. Gonna wait til 6 months!

Yes! My pedi recommended cereal at 4 months with my oldest, but they changed their recommendation to 6 months when my 3 year old was a baby. Solids are really just for practice. They are not meant to replace a feeding of breastmilk or formula.

This is really good to know, because at Arthur's 2 month appointment, we were told we were going to discuss solids at his 4 month appointment. I always thought it was 6 months, and now I can go into the appointment more knowledgeable.

Steph I think if you just told your pedi that you are waiting til 6 months for solids they won't argue with you on it. And you must remember...any Dr can recommend something but ultimately its your call.

Aidan's ped keeps reiterating that he doesn't need anything but bm until a year. She recommends 6 months for any kind of solids tho.

We do baby led solids so it's whenever he's ready he needs great head control, the ability to sit up easily on his own, and to grab and eat the food we put in front of him. I am not into spoon feeding purees. For one thing, it's too much work for me. I try not to fix special baby foods but just give them some version or part of what I'm eating. It worked fabulously with M so I'm hoping it will be good for G as well.

This was recently updated! Summary of AAP advice. They are more focused on readiness signs than on a specific age threshold now.

I started cereal with Jaleigh at 4 months...but I was young and didn't know any different and her pediatrician at the time told me to. It was a complete waste of time so I stopped and waited a few months before I tried again. Now the kids have a dr that highly recommends waiting until at least 6 months for solids so that is what I did with Kiefer and that's my plan for Mckinley too.

Does the term "solids" include the baby purees?

With DS he started pureed food at about 4mos, including baby cereal/oatmeal with pureed fruit mixed in. Never did the cereal in bottle thing.

As for actual solids, I didn't plan a set time frame but rather just went with the flow, knowing my baby and what he was ready for. I never made separate meals for him - he ate what we ate, but totally kept in mind learning-to-eat-friendly foods & snacks. I cant remember when exactly, but I wanna say he was 6+ mos when he started.

I'll play it out the same with Gia.

Solids does include rice cereal, oatmeal, or purées. Basically anything that is not breastmilk/formula. Abri hated purées or food of any kind until about 9 months. I skipped cereal with her altogether. It seems like just empty calories, so I did simple purées when she was ready at 9 months and then quickly moved to just tiny pieces of what we ate

I started cereal at 4 months with Madison and solids at 6 months. With Hailey I started cereal at 5 months and solids at 6 months and she nursed till 13 months. (Only weaned because I got pg). I plan to hold off longer with Zack since I'm not ready to start making baby food yet.

This is what we did with Connor as well, although I'm pretty sure his delays also effected it, he didn't really start eating "regular food" until he was about a year. He was EBF and only picked at foods from 8m on. I offered him things like avocado and sweet potato around 6m but he wanted nothing to do with it.

Yep. We waited until 6 months with Calvin and we'll do the same with Conrad. Of course because it's better to wait, but also because EBF is so simple and I'm lazy and don't want to start preparing meals when I don't have to yet. We skipped the cereal altogether too. Well, the instant boxed stuff. I made regular oatmeal for Calvin and he loved that.

This is basically me, too. I wait until they can sit unassisted and I don't do baby foods.
